Convergence • Convergence concerns cooperation between networks that are currently separate and distinct in both services, access networks and spectrum • Mobile cellular networks • Broadcast networks • Fixed Wireless Access • Fixed / wireline networks • Licensed / unlicensed spectrum • Convergence will enable more efficient spectrum utilisation, improved flexibility to create new services and lower cost of deployment • Consistent with the aim of facilitating a globally harmonised wireless communication environment
Role of the Convergence Issue Manager • The convergence issue has the aim of promoting harmonised standards for cooperation between wireless networks, of influencing decision makers’ views of the wireless world and enabling powerful R&D collaborations • The role of the convergence issue manager is to • Coordinate contacts with relevant forums, standards bodies, regulatory authorities and research groups active in this field • Identify and coordinate opportunities for members of the WWRF to attend / contribute to meetings of these groups • Extend invitations to members of these groups to attend / contribute to WWRF meetings • Promote convergence-related activities within/through WWRF
Proposed Approach • Compile list of relevant organisations and contacts across all regions • Start up web page • Web links • Contacts (any from SB members?) • Meeting information • Key documents • Initiate contacts • Target DVB Forum first? • Arrange exploratory meeting • Target WWRF SB representation at a future meeting • Promote Joint Concept Workshop(s) • Presentations from various forums • Wide range of invited speakers • Educational • User & technical requirements • Invited contributions - ONLY on convergence topics Review and agree relevance in Vision Committee Could this be WWRF’s 3rd meeting in 2006?
