  2. Outline • Motivation • Problem • Solution • Implementation • Milestones • Challenges

  3. Motivation • Millions of dollars are spent each year conducting cinical trials, but… • Analyzing results takes up to two years • There is no standard way to compare multiple trials • A good visualization tool would allow rapid ‘literature review’

  4. Problem • Trial Designers need to: • Locate, retrieve, compare, and contrast trials and subsets of data • Discover errors and problems in data • Identify opportunities for new trials

  5. Users and Data set Qualifying conditions Clinical Trial Treatment Efficacy Outcomes Co-morbidities Safety Outcomes Past Interventions Age Trial Designer

  6. Scenario • Pat is designing a trial for Mother to Child Transmission of HIV • Considers using Zidovudine and Nevirapine delivered together (treatment) • Interested in early pregnancy testing of African populations (qualifying conditions) • Must ensure no current immunotherapy (eligibility) • Needs to understand risks (outcomes) • She uses dynamic queries and linked views to explore data

  7. Proposed Solution

  8. Qualifying Conditions Trial Gestational Age (weeks) Serum Creatinine (mh/dL) > Hemoglobinaemia concentration (g/dL) > Absolute neutrophil count (cells/mm3) > Platelet count (cells/mm3) >  Connor  Davis  Guay  Lallemant

  13. Selected Milestones • October 28 – Finalized Design • November 10 – Separate display-only views complete (aggresive) • November 30 – Dynamic queries and linking complete • December 6 – Testing and evaluation complete • See proposal document for details…

  14. Challenges • Gathering and Structuring Data • Technical challenges • Linking views • InfoViz success rate • Timeframe
