Pronouns Must Agree in Number with its Antecedent • -Singular antecedents must have singular pronouns and plural antecedents must have plural pronouns • Examples: • Beth or Sarah will perform her (not their) comedy routine. • Frederic Chopin and Franz Liszt had a powerful influence on their (not his) generation of composers
Examples • In Thailand a person can be fined the equivalent of $600 if he or she/they throws away used gum on the sidewalk. • To get a green card, a legal immigrant must prove there are no qualified American citizens suitable for the job that has been offered to him and her/ them.
Indefinite Pronouns • Use singular pronouns to refer to: • -somebody • -everybody • -anybody • -someone • -anyone • -everyone • -each • -neither -either -any -a person
Examples: • Body language experts say a person will subconsciously point his or her (not their) • feet toward whomever or whatever is most interesting. • 2. Everyone can improve his or her (not their) etiquette. • 3. Everybody must bring his or her (not their) picture I.D. to the airport.
Examples: • A person with low self-esteem is more likely to criticize and put down others to make himself or herself/ themselves feel better. • Neither of the streets has had its/their potholes filled.
