VSEPR Theory • The location of electrons in a molecule determines the shape of the molecule. • VSEPR stands for “Valence Shell Electron Pair Repulsion”. • Valence Pairs repel each other and therefore are oriented as far apart as possible.
Geometry of MoleculesThe repulsion of electron pairs leads to the molecular shapes. The water molecule is BENT due to the electron pair repulsion.
The methane tetrahedral [CH4]is NONPOLAR because the shape results from equal repulsion by the four bonded hydrogen atoms.
Bond Length & Bond Strength A triple bond is shorter than the other bonds. It is also stronger. For Bond Length: [shortest]Triple < Double < Single [longest] For Bond Strength: [strongest]Triple > Double > Single [weakest]
What is the force between two atoms called?? A BOND! What are the two types of bonds? IONIC and COVALENT!!
What are the names of some of the weaker forces found between molecules? London Dispersion forces weaker forces between all molecules … result from changing polarities within molecules Dipole-Dipole forces forces of attraction between only polar molecules Hydrogen Bonds between polar molecules with hydrogen Example: Hydrogen bonds create special properties, such as surface tension in water.
