A dental implant is an option to replace a missing tooth. In this procedure, our Las Vegas Dentist, implants small titanium shaft into the jaw bone and allowed to heal. The bone grows around it forming a tight connection, this is called integration. Once the implant is firmly integrated with the surrounding bone, Our Las Vegas dentist then works to restore the implant with a crown. A crown will be placed on to the implant via an abutment that is screwed to the implant. So when you are told that you need an implant to replace your missing tooth keep in mind that the implant alone is not a replacement. The restoration includes three parts, the implant itself, an abutment and a crown.
Implants are permanent fixed restorations that are used to replace single or multiple missing teeth. They can also be used as abutments to hold a bridgeor a loose denture. Lower dentures are often very hard to live with due to lack of bone support. Implants can be placed in the lower jaw for better retention of a lower full denture.
Dental implants are a better alternative to bridges since they do not require any adjustments to the healthy teeth that are adjacent to the missing tooth. As discussed in the bridge section in order to place a bridge the adjacent teeth will be reduced in size in order for the bridge to be placed. Implants are better alternatives to partial dentures since they are fixed and not removable. Implants can be placed immediately following an extraction or later when the extraction site is completely healed. Every case is different and your dentist will determine which route will be best for you. Usually an extraction site takes 2-3 months to completely heal. A bone graft is needed in many cases to preserve the area for a future implant. After the bone is ready the implant will be placed and let heal for 3-6 months depending on the condition of the bone.
Our dentist will evaluate the implant and the bone and determine if the implant is ready to be restored with a crown and become functional. If an implant is restored too early due to the functional forces it can become loose and fail. This is why it is important to wait for proper integration of the implant before placing a crown or any other restoration on the implant. In some cases the implant can be placed immediately after the tooth extraction but it is not advisable to place a crown immediately on the implant. A temporary restoration may be placed in the esthetic zone (front teeth) but will not be functional in order to reduce stress on the implant and prevent implant failure
In cases in which all teeth are being extracted you have the option of placing four implants in each arch and restore them with a fixed denture. This method is called all on four implants and is done in one day. This is a great alternative to dentures which cover the palate completely and cause gagging or affect your tasting. Also you don’t have to worry about loose dentures that move around due to lack of support and retention. This is not a removable device and is a permanent solution.
The teeth will be extracted and the implants will be placed immediately. This part is usually done by an oral surgeon or a periodontist. Once the implants are placed a temporary fixed denture will be screwed over the implants. This is done with the cooperation of the surgeon, the general dentist and the laboratory. You will be seen every month for a checkup and in 6 months the temporary denture will be replaced with a final fixed denture by your general dentist. You will be required to follow up with your dentist for regular checkups and maintenance every 6 months.
Are Dental Implants For Me? Dental implants are an excellent option for replacing teeth. Unlike dentures and partials, implants are not removable and unlike bridges there is no additional tooth adjustment or removal of tooth structure with implants. Implants with crown restorations function like natural teeth. The success rate for dental implants is very high. After a thorough examination, Dr. Salmeh Jafarifar will let you know if you are a good candidate for affordable dental implants. She will take radiographs and examine your bone, teeth, and gums. A few things that will be considered are as follows:
Is there enough bone present to support an implant? If not, artificial or cadaver bone may be grafted into the surgical site. Do you have periodontal disease? Periodontal disease must be treated before an implant can be placed. If not, it can compromise the long-term success of the implant. Do you have any systemic diseases? Diseases such as uncontrolled diabetes can cause complications with dental implants.
Are you a smoker? Dental implants are two and a half times more likely to fail for smokers when compared to non-smokers. Implants must be cared for like natural teeth. Are you on any medications that can compromise healing after implant placement? Most medications will not interfere with implant surgery but Dr. Jafarifar will want to review your medical history and current medications. Blood thinners can cause bleeding complications during implant surgery. A class of drugs called the bisphosphonates that are prescribed for osteoporosis can cause major issues with implant surgery or any extraction. Your medical doctor will determine if you need to discontinue the medication prior to surgery.
Maintaining good oral hygiene and having regular dental checkups and cleanings will extend the life of your implants. Preferred Family Dentistry offers several implant options.
