  2. The Gut-Skin Link Recent research reveals a potential correlation between gut health and skin conditions like acne. The gut and skin share biological similarities, and an imbalance in gut bacteria can lead to systemic inflammation that manifests on the skin. Short-Chain Fatty Acids (SCFAs) Gut bacteria convert dietary fibre into SCFAs, essential for gut barrier function and anti-inflammatory activity. An altered gut microbiome can reduce SCFAs, increasing intestinal permeability and allowing inflammatory mediators to reach the skin.

  3. The Aryl Hydrocarbon Receptor (AhR) AhR is a protein that regulates immune responses and is activated by metabolites generated by gut bacteria.
