  2. WHAT IS PILONIDAL DISEASE? Pilonidal disease is a condition where a small hole or tunnel forms in the skin near the top of your buttocks. It can lead to painful cysts or abscesses, often caused by trapped hair and dirt. RISK FACTORS Sitting for long periods, like in a job that involves sitting a lot, can increase the risk of getting pilonidal disease. It's more common in young adults and men.

  3. SYMPTOMS Signs of pilonidal disease include pain when sitting or standing, redness and swelling in the buttocks area, and sometimes, pus or blood draining from the sore spot. DIAGNOSIS Doctors diagnose pilonidal disease by examining the affected area. They may use imaging tests like an ultrasound to get a better look. If there's an infection, they might need to test the fluid draining from the sore.

  4. CAUSES 1. Hair Accumulation: One of the defining features of pilonidal disease is the presence of hair within the cavity or sinus. Loose hairs can enter the sacrococcygeal region and become trapped, eventually leading to the formation of cysts. Friction and Pressure: Activities or professions that involve prolonged sitting, such as long-haul truck driving, can increase the risk of pilonidal disease due to the continuous friction and pressure on the affected area. 2.
