In an equation or expression with an unknown value, you can use a letter to represent that value. For example, in the equation 6 + a = 11, the letter a represents an unknown value that makes the sentence true Let's learn more about using letters to represent values in this lesson.
Look at these equations. In each, a letter has been used to represent an unknown value. There is a certain way to read equations such as these.

How many more minutes did you read on Tuesday than on Monday? • The variable t can represent the difference between 30 minutes and 47 minutes. • 47 – 30 = t
