Polynomials Unit: A-SSE.1a CLASSIFYING POLYNOMIAL Classifying polynomials by degree and terms.
Polynomial Expression Vocabulary • Polynomial- A polynomial is a mathematical expression (terms) or a sum of terms. Polynomial can be used to represent any number of terms. Polynomial is often used to represent more than 3 terms. • Term-Mathematical expressions that contain constant (number) and variables (letters). A number that is by itself is called constant and a number that is attached to a variable is called a coefficient. Terms are separated by addition or subtraction.Terms are joined together by multiplication. • A polynomial term cannot have a square root of a variable, no fractional exponents, and no variables in the denominator of any fraction. • Variables-A letter that represents a value or unknown. • Coefficient-a number that is attached to a variable by multiplication. (number in front of the variable) • Like Terms-have the same variable(s) and the same degree (exponent) for each variable. • Factors-one of two or more numbers and/or variables, that when multiplied together produce a given product.

Classifying Polynomial • There are two different ways to classify polynomials. The first is by the number of terms and the second is by the degree (exponent).

CLASSIFYING POLYNOMIAL Monomial: Mon means one, a polynomial with one term. Examples of Monomials:*Terms are joined by a multiplication. • 2 • -4x • 100x² • 6x³y²
CLASSIFYING POLYNOMIAL * Terms are separated by a + or - sign. • Binomial: Bi means two, a polynomial with two terms. • Examples of Binomials: • x² + 4 • -4x³ - 8 • 10x² +1 • 6x³y² - 12
CLASSIFYING POLYNOMIAL Terms are separated by a + or - sign. Trinomial: Tri means three, a polynomial with three terms. Examples of Trinomials: • 4x² +2x + 4 • -4x³ - 8x² + 2 • 10x² -x +1

CLASSIFYING POLYNOMIAL Name of Polynomial by degree: Constant 4 1 Linear -4x – 8 x² +2x – 3 Quadratic 3x³ - 5x Cubic
Standard Form and Leading Coefficient • Standard Form of a polynomial:terms are placed in order from highest degree to lowest degree. • Leading Coefficient:the coefficient of the term of highest degree in a given polynomial. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=53x8cIPf8X0
Is the polynomial a terms or factor? • Terms: are separated by addition or subtraction. • Factors: are the numbers and/or variable multiplied together to make a product. and are terms because they are separated by an addition sign. is also a factor because is being multiplied by Inside the parenthesis and are terms because they are separated by an subtraction sign. and are also a factor because is being multiplied to
