  2. Symptoms • Having a situation of pneumonia that does not improve • Fever • Chest aching • Cough • Pus in mucus • Trouble in breathing • A crunching sound from the chest • Lessened breathing sounds • Dullness when drumming chest • Liquid in the lungs (visible with a chest X-ray)

The first step of detecting empyema is a chest X-ray. An X-ray can only classify empyema when there is a particular quantity of fluid in the pleural cavity, however. If the doctor doubts there is fluid in the pleural cavity after a chest X-ray, they will perform an ultrasound. Pneumonia is the most common reason of empyema. Persons, who have undergone thoracotomies or chest operations, may also be in danger of developing empyema if bacteria get into the wound.
