PARTIAL KNEE REPLACEMENT A partial knee replacement is surgery to replace only one part of a damaged knee. It can replace either the inside (medial) part, the outside (lateral) part, or the kneecap part of the knee. Surgery to replace the whole knee joint is called total knee replacement. There are many treatment options to consider when suffering with arthritis, such as medication or non-surgical treatment, including exercise and physiotherapy. However, knee replacement surgery may be recommended if there is significant arthritis of the knee. This leaflet is designed to give more information about Partial Knee Replacement so you can make an informed decision. With total knee replacement, the entire surface of the knee is removed. But with Partial Knee Replacement, you can keep up to 75% of your healthy knee – for a more rapid recovery1 with more natural motion. Description: Partial knee replacement surgery removes damaged tissue and bone in the knee joint. It is done when arthritis is present in only part of the knee. The areas are replaced with an artificial implant, called a prosthetic. The rest of your knee is preserved. Partial knee replacements are most often done with smaller incisions, so there is less recovery time. With PKR, only the damaged area of the knee joint is replaced, which may help to minimize trauma to healthy bone and tissue, and also helps relieve arthritis in on or two of the three compartments of the knee. Surgery to replace the whole knee joint is called Partial Knee Replacement.
THE SURGERY: Joints are formed by the ends of two or more bones connected by tissue called cartilage. Healthy cartilage serves a protective cushion, allowing smooth, low-friction movement of the joint. If the cartilage becomes damaged by disease or injury, the tissues around the joint become inflamed, causing pain. With time, the cartilage wears away, allowing the rough edges of bone to rub against each other, causing more pain. When only some of the joint is damaged, a surgeon may be able to repair or replace just the damaged parts. When the entire joint is damaged, a total joint replacement is done. To replace a total hip or knee joint, a surgeon removes the diseased or damaged parts and inserts artificial parts, called prostheses or implants. THE RECOVERY: By undergoing a Partial Knee Replacement the soft tissues, ACL (Anterior Cruciate Ligament) and PCL (Posterior Cruciate Ligament), are kept intact and are not removed. These ligaments help provide stability, balance, and maintain your natural movement after surgery. Recent research has found that approximately 50% of knee replacement patients have an undamaged ACL and are potential candidates for partial knee replacement. With Total Knee Replacement the natural ligaments, the ACL and PCL, are often removed. The implant must then provide the stability to the knee instead of the natural ligaments. With modern materials and improvements in techniques and antibiotic therapy, Total Knee Replacement can be a successful operation. FOLLOW UP: It is usual to see the surgeon 2 to 6 weeks after surgery to assess recovery. APPOINTMENT Our Hospital Location 17-26, 3rd Floor, Amrapali Axiom, Nr.
