The lower one third of the face, de?ned skeletally by the chin, has to be evenly balanced with the upper and middle thirds of the face. A person with a small retruded chin may perceive that his or her nose is too big and may unknowingly ask for a nose reduction. In such cases, it is actually the lack of chin that makes the nose appear deceptively large. In contrast, an over-protruded chin can give an undesired masculine appearance. By correcting the pro?le appearance of the chin, a vast improvement in facial harmony and balance can be achieved. Reasons for Considering a Genioplasty General Procedure A Genioplasty is customised to the patient’s requirements. An augmentation genioplasty or chin enhancement can either be Chin too small, often perceived as “no chin” osseous (releasing and repositioning existing bone) or alloplastic Chin too large, resulting in a “witch’s chin” (utilising arti?cial material). Alloplastic options include silicone and appearance porous polyethylene. The main disadvantage of alloplastic Chin too long, resulting in a “long face” materials is the risk of infection. When adjustments and appearance repositioning of the chin is achieved through movement of a patient’s own bone, this risk is greatly minimised. The entire Chin too short, making the face appear procedure is performed either through an incision inside the mouth rounder or through a small incision on the underside of the chin. Chin asymmetry Recovery Process Immediately after surgery, the face will be ?tted with bandages, tape, or otherwise secured in order to speed the recovery process and to reduce swelling. Generally, post-operative instructions call for plenty of rest and limited movement in order to speed up the healing process and recovery time. Keeping the head elevated during the initial recovery phase is also important. Patients sometimes report minor pain associated with surgery, which can usually be treated effectively with oral medication. Patients may experience some swelling and bruising of the face, which can be eased by using cold compresses. A liquid diet may be required for a few days, as chewing may be di?cult. While complications are rare, patients can minimize potential problems by carefully following post-operative directions given after surgery.
