Juan 14:23 - 29

1. Juan14:23 - 29 23 En aquel tiempo, Jesús dijo a sus discípulos: “El que me ama, cumplirá mi palabra y mi Padre lo amará y vendremos a él y haremos en él nuestra morada. 24 El que no me ama no cumplirá mis palabras. La palabra que están oyendo no es mía, sino del Padre, que me envió.

2. 25 Les he hablado de esto ahora que estoy con ustedes; 26 pero el Paráclito, el Espíritu Santo que mi Padre les enviará en mi nombre, les enseñará todas las cosas y les recordará todo cuanto yo les he dicho. 27 La paz les dejo, mi paz les doy. No se la doy como la da el mundo. No pierdan la paz ni se acobarden.

3. 28 Me han oído decir: ‘Me voy, pero volveré a su lado’. Si me amaran, se alegrarían de que me vaya al Padre, porque el Padre es más que yo. 29 Se lo he dicho ahora, antes de que suceda, para que cuando suceda, crean”. Palabra del Señor

5. John14:23 - 29 23 Jesus answered and said to him, “Whoever loves me will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our dwelling with him. 24 Whoever does not love me does not keep my words; yet the word you hear is not mine but that of the Father who sent me.

6. 25 “I have told you this while I am with you. 26 The Advocate, the holy Spirit that the Father will send in my name - he will teach you everything and remind you of all that I told you. 27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give it to you. Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid.

7. 28 You heard me tell you, ‘I am going away and I will come back to you.’ If you loved me, you would rejoice that I am going to the Father; for the Father is greater than I. 29 And now I have told you this before it happens, so that when it happens you may believe. Gospel of the Lord

9. Reflections on John 14:23 - 29 Reflexiones en Juan 14:23 - 29 by Fr. Sam Rosales, S.J. May 5, 2013 This is the Sixth Sunday of Easter. The Gospel reading is an answer of Jesus to a question asked by Judas Thaddeus. In John 14:22 he asked: “Lord, how is it that you will manifest yourself to us, and not to the world” ? So as to understand the answer of Jesus, I would like to make a few observations about what John means by the term “the world.”

10. Este es el Sexto Domingo de Pascua. La lectura del Evangelio de hoy es una contestación de Jesús a la pregunta hecha por Judas Tadeo. En Juan 14:22 le pregunto: “Señor, ¿Cómo es que te manifestaras a nosotros, y no al mundo?” Para poder entender la contestación de Jesús, quiero hacer unas cuantas observaciones acerca de lo San Juan quiere decir con el termino: “el mundo.”

11. In 1 John 5:19 John says, “the whole world is in the power of the evil one.” In other words, this term refers to those who have deliberately turned away from Jesus and are under the power of Satan. This group of people opposes the realization of God’s plan for salvation. They oppose God’s plan for holiness.

En Primera de Juan 5:19 Juan dice: “el mundo entero esta en el poder del malo.” En otras palabras, este termino se refiere a los que deliberadamente se han removido de Jesús y están bajo el poder de Satanás. Este grupo de gente se opone a la realización del plan de Dios para la salvación. Se opone al plan de Dios para la santidad.

13. We are not supposed to love that world. In 1 John 2:15-16, John says “Do not love the world or the things that are in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the pride of life is not of the Father but is of the world.” Love of that world and love of God are irreconcilable. No man can serve two masters. We have to make a free choice.

14. No hay que amar a ese mundo. En Primera de Juan 2:15-16 Juan dice: “No amen al mundo, ni lo que hay en el mundo. Quien ama al mundo, no lleva dentro el amor del Padre, porque de todo lo que hay en el mundo, los deseos de la carne, los deseos de los ojos, y la vanagloria de la vida, no proviene del Padre, sino del mundo. El amor de ese mundo y el amor de Dios no se pueden reconciliar. Nadie puede servir a dos amos. Tenemos que hacer una decisión libre.

15. There are three reasons why that world described above cannot be reconciled to God. First, due to lust, it longs for the pleasures of the flesh. Second, due to lust, it longs for the pleasures of the eyes. And third, it is full of pride. It craves for self-satisfaction, and self-exaltation. This is not pleasing to the Father. These are obstacles to faith and union with God.

16. Hay tres razones por las cuales el mundo aquí mencionado no se puede reconciliar con Dios. Primeramente, por la lujuria anhela los placeres de la carne. Segundo, por la lujuria, anhela los placeres de los ojos. Y tercero, esta lleno de orgullo. Anhela satisfacción de si mismo, y exaltación de si mismo. Esto no es agradable a Dios Padre. Estas cosas son obstáculos a la fe y a la unión con Dios.

17. “The world” that John condemns is the world that loves the darkness, rather than the light. It loves the glory of men and not the glory of God. In John 12:43 it says “they loved the praise of men rather than the praise of God.” Those who rejected him were blind. In John 5:42 Jesus said, “The love of God was not in them.” They were in darkness. Jesus said to them: “The light is with you a little longer, walk while you have the light, lest the darkness overtake you; he who walks in darkness does not know where he goes” (John 12:35-36).

18. “El mundo” que San Juan condena es el mundo que ama a la tiniebla, en vez de la luz. Ama a la gloria de los hombres y no a la gloria de Dios. En Juan 12:43 dice: “Amaron a las alabanzas de los hombres en vez de las alabanzas de Dios.” Los que lo rechazaron estaban ciegos. En Juan 5:42 Jesús dice: “El amor de Dios no estaba en ellos.” Estaban en la oscuridad. Jesús les dijo: “La luz esta con ustedes por un poco tiempo. Caminen mientras que tienen la luz, antes que los sorprenda las tinieblas. El que camina en tinieblas no sabe a donde va; mientras hay luz confíen en la luz para quedar iluminados” (Juan 12:35-36).

19. In 1 John 3:13 John says: “Do not wonder, brothers, that the world hates you”. By its very nature, hatred makes union with God impossible. We should not be surprised if there is opposition to the truth, and to the Lord’s teachings on holiness, and to the love of Jesus.

20. En Primera de Juan 3:13 Juan dice: “Hermanos míos, no se extrañen si el mundo los aborrece.” Por su mera naturaleza, el odio hace imposible la unión con Dios. No debemos estar sorprendidos si hay oposición a la verdad, y a las enseñanzas del Señor acerca de la santidad, y al amor de Jesús.

21. “If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you. If you were of the world, the world would love its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. Remember the word that I said to you, ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me they will persecute you; if they kept my word, they will keep yours also… He who hates me, hates my Father also. If I had not done among them the works which no one else did, they would not have sin; but now they have seen and hated both me and my Father” (John 15:18-20, 23-24).

22. “Cuando el mundo los odie, tengan presente que primero me ha odiado a mi. Si pertenecieran al mundo, el mundo los querría como a cosa suya, pero como no le pertenecen, sino que al elegirlos yo los he sacado de él, el mundo los odia. Recuerden la palabra que les he dicho, “Un siervo no es más grande que su amo.” Si me han perseguido a mí, los perseguirán a ustedes; si han cumplido mi palabra, también cumplirán su palabra... Aquel que me odia a mí, odia a mi Padre también. Si no hubiera hecho entre ellos las obras que nadie mas ha hecho, no tuvieran pecado; pero ahora lo han visto y odian a mí y a mi Padre” (Juan 15: 18-20, 23-24).

23. St. Ignatius Loyola points out that the devil tempts the world to covet riches, so that they may more easily attain the empty honors of this world, and then to overweening pride. From there, he leads them to all vices (Spiritual Exercises # 142). He leads them to greed, to lust, to disobedience, and to selfishness. That is why we should pray for a true knowledge of the world that is full of treachery. We should be filled with horror that we tolerate so much evil. Let us pray that we put away from us all that is worldly and vain (Spiritual Exercises # 63). Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Life.

24. San Ignacio Loyola indica que el demonio da la tentación al mundo a codiciar las riquezas, para que ellos mas fácilmente lleguen a los honores vacíos de este mundo, y así llegar al orgullo arrogante. Desde allí, los conduce a todos los vicios (Ejercicios Espirtuales #142). Los conduce a la codicia, a la lujuria, a la desobediencia, y al egoísmo. Por eso hay que rezar por un verdadero conocimiento del mundo que esta llena de perfidia. Debemos estar llenos de horror que toleramos tanta maldad. Oremos que removemos de nosotros todo lo que es mundano y vano (Ejercicios Espirituales # 63). Jesús es el Camino, la Luz, y la Vida.

25. Once we have decided to follow Jesus no matter what, he gives us an enormous peace in our hearts. It is better than anything the world has to give. “Not as the world gives, do I give to you; let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid” (John 14:27). “The victory over the world is our faith!” (1 John 5:4).

26. Una vez que hayamos decidido seguir a Cristo pase lo que pase, Él nos da una paz enorme en nuestros corazones. Es mejor que cualquier cosa que pueda dar el mundo. “La paz os dejo, mi paz os doy; yo no os doy como el mundo la da. No se turbe su corazón, ni tengan miedo” (Juan 14:27). “ ¡La victoria sobre el mundo es nuestra fe ! ” (1 Juan 5:4).
