What is Mercantilism? In the case of England and the colonies, England monopolized the trade and the profits went to England. Legally the colonies were only allowed to export raw materials and import any finished products back from Britain. Mercantilism benefitted the British because it kept money in British trade and prevented the Americans from trading with anyone else. Mercantilism benefitted the colonies because it gave them a secure market for their raw materials.
