TRAINING OF FORENSIC PSYCHIATRISTS …IN DENMARK Tina Gram Larsen, M.D. The 9th Nordic Symposium on Forensic Psychiatry
In Denmark the number of forensic patients has increased markedly during the last decades • Politicians and the media have increased their focus on escaping and dangerous patients The 9th Nordic Symposium on Forensic Psychiatry
In Denmark most of the forensic patients are treated in General Psychiatry • The way in which services are provided differ - and only in one of the Regions are all forensic patients treated in a forensic setting • The Forensic Evaluations are mainly made in four centres – Three of these centres are connected to ”medium secure services” The 9th Nordic Symposium onForensicPsychiatry
Despite a tendency of describing Forensic Psychiatry as a subspecialty, it IS NOT in Denmark a formal subspecialty • The formal education in Forensic Psychiatry is therefore described (only) in the programs of General Psychiatry The 9th Nordic Symposium on Forensic Psychiatry
Requirements in General Psychiatry in Denmark: • One year of introductory training • Four years of clinical training in General Psychiatry • ½ year of training in neurology • Mandatory courses (general and specific courses) including a cource of Forensic Psychiatry • Training in researching • Basic education in psychotherapy The 9th Nordic Symposium on Forensic Psychiatry
Requirements in the clinicaltraining • Supervised treatment of two forensic patients (1-3 years) in inpatient and outpatient settings • Reports to the public prosecutor (or reports on involuntary treatment) and one Forensic court report • ”Focused experience” in a Forensic Department (maximum 4 weeks) is possible The 9th Nordic Symposium on Forensic Psychiatry
”Focused Experience” (example – Aalborg) 3 days in the Forensic Department participating in meetings on the wards, receiving lessons in specific topics concerning assesment, treatment, reports and criminal law (usually 2-5 trainees at the same time) Later on individually arranged supervision of a court report
The specificmandatorycourse in ForensicPsychiatry: • Arranged by The Clinic of Forensic Psychiatry in Copenhagen • 3 days covering the topics: • criminal law, involuntary treatment, treatment of the forensic patients in general, treatment in high security setting, treatment of sexual offenders, court reports psychological tests and the Medico-legal council The 9th Nordic Symposium on Forensic Psychiatry
Aim of the course: ”knowledge of the penal law related to psychiatry and knowledge of the laws of involuntary treatment”
So… Lacking the formal requirements we learn while working in Forensic Psychiatry AND Have made an informal ”Expert-course”
”Expert-course” in ForensicPsychiatry: • (Arranged by the Forensic Section of The Danish Psychiatric Association since 2003). 4 courses of 3 days on: • Forensic organization • Law and assignment • International forensic aspects (given in London) • Treatment of the forensic patients The 9th Nordic Symposium on Forensic Psychiatry
