  1. Habakkuk’s Burden Habakkuk 1:1-4 Key Word: How? What? Why? July 7, 2013

  2. Habakkuk 1:1-4 1 The oracle that Habakkuk the prophet saw. 2 O Lord, how long shall I cry for help, and you will not hear? Or cry to you "Violence!" and you will not save? 3 Why do you make me see iniquity, and why do you idly look at wrong? Destruction and violence are before me; strife and contention arise. 4 So the law is paralyzed, and justice never goes forth. For the wicked surround the righteous; so justice goes forth perverted.

  3. How Can I Be Happy? 1. How can I be happy when it seems God doesn’t care? 2. How can I be happy when God’s care is so strange? 3. How can I be happy under any circumstance?

  4. Overview of the Book • The unusual nature of the book • Mixed genres of writing • Placing the prophet in history • Difficulty of OT Prophesy

  5. Theme and Key Verses of the Book Theme: God is sovereign in all of history and God is trustworthy in all of life. Habakkuk 2:4b – …the righteous shall live by his faith. Habakkuk 3:17-18 Though the fig tree should not blossom, nor fruit be on the vines, the produce of the olive fail and the fields yield no food, the flock be cut off from the fold and there be no herd in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the Lord; I will take joy in the God of my salvation.

  6. Habakkuk 1:1-4 1. Habakkuk’s burden (1:1) 2. Habakkuk’s concern (1:2-3) 3. The cause of Habakkuk’s burden (1:4)

  7. 1. Habakkuk’s Burden • 1 The oracle that Habakkuk the prophet saw. Deuteronomy 18:18 – I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their brothers. And I will put my words in his mouth, and he shall speak to them all that I command him. Micah 3:8 – But as for me, I am filled with power, with the Spirit of the Lord, and with justice and might, to declare to Jacob his transgression and to Israel his sin.

  8. What does it mean to us? • God does not leave himself without a witness Acts 14:16-17 – …In past generations he allowed all the nations to walk in their own ways. Yet he did not leave himself without witness, • God has revealed himself in history • How do we respond in difficult times?

  9. “Don’t doubt God’s love under sufferings. God’s heart cannot be understood infallibly from his action. Faith many times discovers love in God’s heart when it sees nothing but frowns on his forehead…Faith looks for the hand of heaven in the events of life… God always acts from love , and the saints good is always the end of his dispensations.” Puritan Thomas Lye

  10. Am I a Soldier of the Cross “Must I be carried to the skies On flowery beds of ease, While others fought to win the prize, And sailed through bloody seas?” “God does not promise his people calm seas, but only that we will reach port safely.” John D Currid – Commentary on Habakkuk

  11. 2. Habakkuk’s Concern (v.2-3) 2 O Lord, how long shall I cry for help, and you will not hear? Or cry to you "Violence!" and you will not save? • Why do you make me see iniquity, and why do you idly look at wrong? Destruction and violence are before me; strife and contention arise. Theodicy - an attempt to understand the nature and actions of God in the face of evil and suffering.”

  12. 3. The Cause of Habakkuk’s Burden (4) • So the law is paralyzed, and justice never goes forth. For the wicked surround the righteous; so justice goes forth perverted. Isaiah 5:20 - Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter! When we live by sight we forget, or our minds grow dim to the thought that God is sovereign and he rules over all.

  13. Questions??? 1. How could God be sovereign of the universe and appoint suffering for a believer? 2. Why would God purpose that Christians should face sickness, injury, persecution, strife and hardship? 3. Why does God not convert my children, my grandchildren, my sister, brother, parents…? 4. Why does God resolve that believers should battle against the same afflictions as unbelievers? Is God not our God? 5. Why does God appear to be on the sidelines, leaving the believer in his suffering and hardship? 6. Why is he not working?
