The men behind the flipped classroom • Jonathan Bergmann • Jonathan Bergmann has been an educator for 22 years and holds a bachelors degree from Oregon State University in Science Education and a masters degree from the University of Colorado in Instructional Technology.  He currently teaches science at Woodland Park High School  in Woodland Park, Colorado.  In 2002 he was awarded the prestigious Presidential Award for Excellence for in Science and Math Teaching. He is a national board certified teacher in Adolescent and Young Adult Science.  He has taught many staff development courses, primarily in the area of technology integration. He can be reached at:  jon@flippedclass.com. • Aaron Sams • Aaron Sams has been an educator for 8 years and holds a bachelors degree from Biola University in Biochemistry and a masters degree from Biola University in Classroom Instruction.  He currently teaches science at Woodland Park High School  in Woodland Park, Colorado where his peers consider him to be an innovator in the implementation of technology in the classroom.  As the recipient of various technology grants, he has had the opportunity to experiment with a wide range of technological teaching tools. In 2010 he was awarded the prestigious Presidential Award for Excellence in Science and Math Teaching.  He can be reached at:  aaron@flippedclass.com

  4. The Flipped Classroom • What it isn’t— • A synonym for online videos. When most people hear about the flipped class all they think about are the videos.  It is the the interaction and the meaningful learning activities that occur during the face-to-face time that is most important. • About replacing teachers with videos. • An online course. • Students working without structure. • Students spending the entire class staring at a computer screen. • Students working in isolation.  • What it is— • A means to INCREASE interaction and personalized contact time between students and teachers. • An environment where students take responsibility for their own learning.  • A classroom where the teacher is not the "sage on the stage", but the "guide on the side". • A blending of direct instruction with constructivist learning. • A classroom where students who are absent due to illness or extra-curricular activities such as athletics or field-trips, don't get left behind. • A class where content is permanently archived  for review or remediation. • A class where all students are engaged in their learning. • A place where all students can get a personalized education.

What my classroom looks like • The students are VERY aware of my website! http://pinkertonsplace.weebly.com • They watch a video no more than 10 minutes long and answer a couple of questions that are sent to me via google drive. • When they come to class, we are able to have a meaningful discussion, do an activity, lab, or some discovery activity.

How to go about it • Lots of time commitment the first year to go all or nothing • Maybe flip a few lessons the first year and try it out • Maybe a modified version of the flipped classroom fits you better or your students • Website or Edmodo is a key factor • Inform your parents from the beginning what you are trying • Understand there will be growing pains

  7. What were my experiences • Lots of time because I decided all or nothing • It wasn’t perfect • Did my students watch the video? • How I keep up with everything! • Do my students like it? • Do the parents like it? • WHY did I do this??

Some resources that help me • Weebly—Website creator—I upgraded to Weebly Pro • Edmodo—way to communicate to your students other than a website • Edpuzzle—a great way to manipulate a video • You tube—a great start to pulling videos you like instead of making your own to start with • Socrative and Kahoot—ways to create an electronic quiz • Tellagami, sock puppets, voki, animoto—free ways to create videos • Camtasia—not free but awesome way to create videos • OneNote—free and can be on all devices (journal) • Lecture Capture—not free ($0.99) but like ShowMe where you can write on your Ipad and talk and record
