Fukushima, 5 years on YayoiHitomi from Fukushima
Let me introduce myself • Born in Fukushima in 1961, • living in Koriyama City, Fukushima Prefecture • Working with the following campaign groups • The Complainants for the Criminal Prosecution of the Fukushima Nuclear Disaster • Fukushima Woman Against Nukes • Fukushima Action Project
Please remember • The situation after Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant Disaster is not “under control” at all • Fukushima should not be repeated
Being prepared for lifting of evacuation order Lifting evacuation orders Restricted residence zones Difficult-to-return zones People were once told to evacuate because the radiation level was 20mSv/year. They are now encouraged to return because the level is 20mSv/year. Daiichi NPP Daini NPP
My home town is Koriyama City, 60km away from Fukushima Daiichi NPP 20km Koriyama City 30km 60km
“Decontamination” of my garden Before: 0.86μSv/h After: 0.36μSv/h Still seven to eight times higher than pre-disaster levels
Storage of contaminated waste at home To be buried in your garden or to be stored in containers A sign to show where the waste is buried
A temporary storage site of contaminated wasteMuch of contaminated waste is simply left outside
166 children in Fukushima: either diagnosed with thyroid cancer or with suspected cases of thyroid cancer The Japanese government and Fukushima Prefecture repeat experts’ opinion that “radiation effect in these cancers is unlikely” Only a minority of experts point out radiation as a cause, but their opinions must be heard The majority of experts kept on saying “nuclear power plants are safe” until Fukushima Daiichi NPP exploded
We need • Proper epidemiological studies on radiation effects • Various opinions from experts • A long-term framework for people to have regular respite opportunities
Workers in Fukushima Diichi NPP Decommission works of Fukushima Daiichi NPP will remain difficult Even robots failed under such high radiation levels 7,000 people per day work in the plant while being exposed to severe radiation Risk of secondary accidents are always there
Lawsuits against TEPCO About 20,000 people are suing TEPCO The Complainants for the Criminal Prosecution of the Fukushima Nuclear Disaster consists of 15,000 complainants and I am one of them TEPCO should be held criminally responsible for the death and injuries of 44 inpatients in Futaba hospital and 13 officials who fought fire at Fukushima Daiichi NPP
TEPCO had been aware of a possibility that 15.7-meter-high Tsunamis can hit Fukushima Daiichi and Daini NPPs before the disaster TEPCO abandoned the plan to build embankments due to its excessive cost They were also negligent in securing back-up power generators On 29 February 2016 three former TEPCO executives were criminally charged with negligence
Japan can produce enough energy without nuclear power plants
Many people do not want a nuclear power plant in their backyards. You cannot just put the burden on other people! I am against: -restarting any nuclear power plant in Japan -exporting nuclear power plants from Japan
Taru-wo-shiru (to know contentment) It's an ancient aphorism It means happy is the person who is content with what you already have There is enough energy if we do not want more than we need Let us go beyond nuclear power immediately
