Question 1 for discussion How would you rank these factors perceived to contributed most to student reported STEM Major attrition? Explain your choice. • Instructional Methodology of Faculty • Tutoring support • Conceptual difficulties - Morale/Self Esteem
RISE GrantRaising Interest in STEM Education • Minority Science and Engineering Improvement program – DOE • Drexel University as a Subcontract partner • Funded from 2013-date
Key Components in RISE Grant • Faculty Professional Development • Academic Tutoring in Physics/Engineering • RISE STEM Video Creation • STEM Workshops • Academic Research • STEM Clubs
Faculty Professional Development • Science Speakers for content knowledge • Speakers for enhanced technological knowledge ex: - Canvas Grade Book - Active learning classroom
Academic Tutoring Support • Drexel University PhD candidates in Engineering provide tutorial support for physics and engineering courses • Support arranged by Facebook, text and Snapchat between the tutors and students as well as walk-in
RISE STEM Video Creation • Videos created by STEM Faculty in Math, Biology, Chemistry, Statistics • Videos used for direct instructional support and linked to departmental websites once completed
STEM Workshops • Faculty from Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Math run the workshops • AMP/ RISE students and general population students invited to participate • Registration is by the web and the dataset is compiled by IT
STEM Workshops • Workshops are held before the semester starts • Instructional Goals and Expectations for the STEM courses • Samples of student work defining the standard of excellence presented
Question 2 for Discussion • What do you think would be the greatest benefits to the STEM Workshops? Discuss the possibilities.
Academic Research • Summer Research Program at Drexel University • 10 weeks with a Initial proposal and Final presentation • Student seminars on Mat Lab, Citations etc.
Academic Research • Mini Research Experiences in Biology on CCP campus • Held in Winter and Summer sessions • CCP Biology Faculty run the research training
Reporting RequirementsRISE grant Annual Report addressing completion status of the grant’s goals Interim Reports Project Evaluation by External Evaluator
Data Informed Decision Making as a Department Head • Open Lab in the CCP Biology Dept. • Research Room • Student Poster Presentations each April • Other Grants to support the department [ PBI, DOD]
