Matter Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space!
Mass (physical) • A measure of how much matter is in an object.
States of Matter • There are different “states” of matter. No, not like Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico. States of matter are also known as phases (a physical state of matter). What are properties? • Matter has observable and measurable qualities. • We can use general properties to identify substances. • Two basic types of properties of matter: Physical properties and Chemicalproperties:
Physical Properties • Physical properties are used to identify, describe and classify matter. • Characteristic of a substance that can be observed (using your senses) without changingthe substance into something else.

Chemical Properties • Chemical properties are characteristics involved when a substance interacts with another substance to change its chemical make-up.
Chemical Changes • Burning something • (combustibility: ability to burn) • Making it react to some other substance (water) • Making it rust • CANNOT be reversed • Cooking something

Law of Conservation of Mass • According to the law of conservation of matter, the weight of a substance remains constant whether it is whole, separated into pieces, or in a different state.
When an object or substance goes through a physical change, the weight of the object or substance stays the same. This is because matter can neither be created nor destroyed by physical or chemical changes. It can only change forms. For example, if 5 ounces of pure ice melts into liquid water, the liquid will also have a weight of 5 ounces.
