Male Circumcision • Male circumcision: Common genital modification in which the foreskin is removed from the penis • Does not necessarily protect from HIV and STIs, instead its advised to use condoms along with proper hygiene to protect oneself • Phimosis: extremely tight foreskin • Studies show mixed results about the health value of circumcision for men (and their partners) – note the reasons why circumcision may be valuable from a health perspective, the arguments for not doing circumcision, and the fact that the American Academy of Pediatrics has changed its recommendations several times starting in 1975 • Check out the timeline: http://www.historyofcircumcision.net/index.php?option=content&task=view&id=31

FGC or FGM? • Circumcision, mutilation, cutting….each carry a value judgment • Female circumcision: Removal or shortening of the clitoris • It may include sewing the labia together to prevent sexual intercourse or the rupture of the hymen • Female genital mutilation (FGM): Performing female circumcision without antiseptic or anesthesia • Traditional procedure associated with the transition from being a girl to a woman

Female Genital Cutting: Torture or Tradition? • Note when and where female genital mutilation (FGM) has been practiced around the world • Note why FGM has been practiced • Think about whether FGM is an area in which we should tolerate and respect the practices of other cultures, or whether we should try to stop FGM from being practiced even though that means interfering with other cultures’beliefs
