BA & Leverhulme early-career fellowships British Academy Postdoctoral Fellowships UK/EEA national or UK PhD, up to 3 yrs from PhD award except ‘career breaks’ on 1 Apr after deadline or reasonable expectation that have submitted & had thesis examined by 1 Apr after deadline Salary + research expenses (£6k max for whole of project) + mentor time costs (1hr/month) for 3 yrs 5 hrs/wk max teaching 2-stage app process, Oct deadline 1st stage, shortlist early Feb, 2nd stage primarily about updating publication list & detailed budget ~5-8% success rate Leverhulme Trust Early Career Fellowships UK degree/fixed-term post, up to 5 yrs from viva except ‘career breaks’ Preference for those showing evidence of mobility in academic careers to date, moving institution, else must make case 50% of salary + £6k/yr research expenses for 3 yrs Spring LT deadline At UCL, Depts & Faculties often have internal app processes of own ~10-15% success rate
Wellcome Research Fellowships in Humanities and Social Science Must not have permanent post Must hold at UK ROI Any citizenship/nationality Up to 3 yrs Salary + research expenses, travel to confs, money for PE 2-stage process 2 rounds/yr – prelim deadline for next round 6 July, full deadline 21 Sept
Leverhulme Research Project Grants Must typically have permanent position, must be in UK ROI Can have up to 3 co-applicants (not essential) Should have RA(s) and/or PhDs on grant Up to 5 yrs long PI/UK coapplicants can get up to 1/3 of time on grant (cover for TF) Up to £500k No money for workshops 2-stage application process
Small grants BA/LT Small Research Grants Support for clearly defined, discrete piece of research with identifiable outcome on completion of BA-funded component of research Must have specific research objectives, planned programme of activity to meet these objectives & outputs Don’t have to have permanent post, don’t even need to be affiliated to academic org, but must be in UK £500-£10k for up to 2 yrs – won’t support salary costs Mid-Oct & Apr/May deadlines Those smaller associations, societies & trusts mentioned earlier Typically have small grants specifically aimed at ECRs Usually up to £5k For research expenses, travel, conference attendance, etc. (Some have 1- or 2-yr postdoc fellowships)
Marie Sklodowska-Curie Individual Fellowships Part of 1st Pillar of EC Horizon 2020 funding programme 2 types: European Fellowships & Global Fellowships European Fellowships - 1-2 yrs in Europe Global Fellowships - 1-2 yrs o/s Europe, followed by mandatory 1 yr reintegration phase in Europe Strong focus on careers & skills development & int’l mobility Excellence (50%), Impact (30%), Implementation (20%) Must have doctorate, typically <12m in last 3 yrs in host country (different rules for those restarting career) Generous allowances, incl living allowance, mobility & family allowances for researcher, contributions to research, networking and training costs Next deadline 14 Sept 2017 ~15-20% success rate across Europe
European Research Council (ERC) Starting Grants Part of 1st Pillar of EC Horizon 2020 funding programme Support excellent researchers of any nationality, based at EU/AC institution To carry out frontier researchprojects on any topic, if nec with research team PI does not need to be employed by host institution at time of application PhD awarded 2-7 yrs from 1st Jan in yr of call(extensions for mat/pat leave, ext. sick leave, etc.) Significant publications in major int’l peer-reviewed journals and/or monograph, incl important pubs w/o PhD supervisor, invited presentations, awards, prizes Up to €1.5m for up to 5 yrs 100% of direct eligible costs + flat rate contrib to indirect costs of 25% of direct costs Grant can cover own salary, costs of research team (senior research staff, postdocs, PhD students, non-academic staff), research costs 1-stage submission, 2-stage peer review process, interview in Brussels 6 SSH Panels, 9 life sciences panels, 10 in engineering & phys sciences ~7-10% success rates for SSH
