California’s Renewable Energy Pilot Projects Southern California Forum Solar Water Heater Pilot
SWH Pilot • Start Date: August 2006 • Participants: 10 statewide DOE Providers and 1 Utility Low-Income Energy Efficiency Provider • Northern County: Redwood • Central Counties: Sacramento, Santa Cruz, Monterey, San Mateo, Kings • Southern Counties: Los Angeles, San Bernardino, Riverside
SWH Pilot • Units: Each of the 11 agencies will install 2 units in their respective Counties • Completed: 18 units -16 Closed Loop Systems 1 electric 15 natural gas -2 Open Loop Systems 1electric 1 natural gas The last 3 units in Los Angeles County may be combined into a 4-6 unit multi-family building.
SWH Unit • Panels -Manufacturer developed the panels with a DOE grant -Light weight: 19 lbs each -Dimensions: 6 ft X 20 ins X 3 ins -Closed Loop system: 4 collectors 81 lbs total weight with glycol -Open Loop system: 2 collectors 40 lbs total weight with water
SWH Pilot • Data Collection: -Energy Bills are collected for each recipient Data will be crossed referenced with weather data -A Data Logger is being developed Statewide pilot for the California Solar Initiative (CSI)
SWH Pilot Cost • PVEA dollars were used to fund this pilot • Weatherization was completed through DOE, LIHEAP and Utility Energy Efficiency Program • $150,000 for Pilot including training materials and installations Each Agency contracted for $10,000/2units Installation time was from 4-10 hours Total Unit Cost was from $4,000-4,500 Material Cost was from $1,600-2,800 • Training was provided to other network agencies throughout the state
Finally • All households received weatherization -LIHEAP, DOE, Utility • SCHWARZENEGGER SIGNS ANOTHER LANDMARK SOLAR BILL • AB 1470 Promotes Solar Water Heating, Cutting Natural Gas Demand and Global Warming Pollution • Sacramento – Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed yet another landmark solar power bill today, The Solar Water Heating and Efficiency Act of 2007 (AB 1470), authored by Assemblymember Jared Huffman (Marin) and sponsored by Environment California. At a celebratory event at the CAL EPA headquarters, supporters of the bill touted its promise of creating a mainstream market for solar water heating technologies by offering $250 million in rebates for California consumers over the next ten years. • Ten (10) % is set-aside for low-income households • Environment California was instrumental in the successful passage of “The Solar Thermal SWH “ bill. State Senator Jared Huffman Bernadette Del Chiaro, Environment California
