Psychotic Disorder • An abnormal state of the mind, generic psychiatric term, which usually involves “loss of contact with reality.” It can have an organic or functional origin and produces a territory for the persons ability to think, respond emotionally, communicate, remember, and interpret reality.
The exact cause is not known Sometimes it is genetic (runs in the family) Stress Drug Abuse Major Life Changes Imbalance of certain chemicals the brain Causes of psychotic disorder
Symptoms Positive negative • Delusions: - False personal beliefs that are not part of a persons culture • Hallucinations: - Sensing things that aren’t there • Disorganized thinking: - Being unable to think straight • Agitation or excitement: - Appearing very excited, restless or hyperactive • Grandiosity: - Believing they are powerful, wealthy, or have special powers • Suspiciousness - Mistrusted and guarded • Hostility - Behaving in an abusive, sarcastic, uncooperative manner • Lack of drive or initiative • Social Withdrawal: - Spend most time alone • Emotional Unresponsiveness - Feel less connected emotionally - Inappropriate motions • Lack of Spontaneity - Movements seem unnatural and slow • Poor Communication Skills - Avoids eye contact and conversation • Stereotyped Thinking - Beliefs that may seem unreasonable to others
Diagnostics no laboratory tests to specifically diagnose psychotic disorders blood tests and X-rays are used to rule out physical illness as the cause of the symptoms refer the person to a psychiatrist, psychologist, or mental health professionals Psychiatrists use specially designed interview and assessment tools to evaluate a person for a psychotic disorder.
Cures/ Treatments • Combination of medication and psycho therapy (counseling) • Treated as outpatients • Depending on how severe it is they might be hospitalized to stabilize their condition • Each person might respond to therapy/ treatment differently
