1. The First Epistle of John Witnesses for Jesus Christ
1 John 5:6-10
2. Introduction John has stressed two important things
Jesus Christ has come in the flesh 1 Jn 4:2
Those who believe in Jesus as the Christ are born of God 1 Jn 5:1
But statements are in need of witnesses
So now John offers several witnesses in support of the claims about Jesus
3. The witness of the water and the blood 1 John 5:6a
Context Gnosticism (1 Jn 4:1-3)
Some believed Jesus Christ only seemed to have come in the flesh
Some believed Christ came upon Jesus at baptism
Those believed Christ left Jesus before crucifixion
Water refers to Jesus baptism
Blood refers to Jesus death
Jesus Christ fulfilled His purpose by both His baptism and His death
Not by baptism alone
4. The witness of the Spirit 1 John 5:6b
Testifies (Gk martureo)
to be a witness, to give evidence for, to bear record
The Spirit can testify to:
The conception of Jesus (Mt 1:20)
The baptism of Jesus (Mt 3:16)
The temptation of Jesus (Lk 4:1)
The ministry of Jesus (Lk 4:18)
The death, the resurrection, and the ascension of Jesus (Jn 14-16; esp. 15:26; 16:13-14)
5. The agreement of the witnesses 1 Jn 5:7-8
The Spirit, the water, and the blood all agree
Jesus Christ came in the flesh
Jesus Christ was baptized
Jesus Christ was crucified
The additional three (1 Jn 5:7)
Found in Latin texts after 1200 A.D.
First appearance in Greek texts after 1500 A.D.
Has been dropped from most modern translations
6. The witness of God 1 Jn 5:9
Which ought to have greater weight with us
The testimony of man (as seen in courts, etc)? or
The testimony of God?
God has testified of His Son
At His baptism Mt 3:17
At the Transfiguration Mt 17:5
Before betrayal Jn 12:27-30
During crucifixion Mt 27:45
After His death Mt 27:50-54
7. The witness in the believer 1 Jn 5:10
A personal, subjective witness
John 7:16-17
Could the changes in your life since you became a Christian be anything other than from God?
If we live in accordance with the Spirit, the water, the blood, and the testimony of God
Then we will know (have the testimony) within ourselves that Jesus Christ came in the flesh
To deny that Jesus Christ came in the flesh is to call God a liar
8. Conclusion What witnesses testify that Jesus Christ came in the flesh?
The water, the blood, the Spirit, and God
All testify whether you believe them or not
If you believe them, then you receive a fifth witness within yourself
If you dont believe them, then you are calling God a liar
Do you wish to stand before God on Judgment Day and explain why you thought He was a liar?
