  3. Pre-placement Briefing • Important information re preparing for and doing (well on) your placement Shortly, you will be emailed to collect 2 envelopes of placement information: • 1 for you (marked 'S') • 1 for your employer (marked 'E') - collect only when placed • (only collect when you have placement - see Bb for documents)

  4. For student: • 1 copy of 'General information for placement supervisors and students' • 1 copy of 'Professional Practice Module' booklet • 1 'individual learning plan for PPM' • H&S booklet For employer: • Letter for WPS • 1 copy of General Information... • 1 copy of PPM booklet

  5. Before starting placement: • Check email and blackboard for messages on a regular basis • Ensure you still have the placement booklet provided in year one • Ensure SHU has info relating to start date, contract etc. • download Hallam Union placement handbook at http://hallamunion.org/advice/files/2009/07/placementweb.pdf

  6. You will be notified (by email) when to: • take compulsory H&S test - available now • sign to confirm that you have read the SHU letter authorising start of placement • for students going into an accredited pathology lab.; collect letter confirming details of course to allow application for IBMS competence portfolio

  7. On starting placement: Complete and return the following items asap to the placement team (J.Adhikari@shu.ac.uk) • 'contact details' form • 'provision of information, instructions & training' form • risk assessment (covered in detail on 19th April)

  8. Whilst on placement: • Check blackboard site regularly for announcements • Check SHU email account regularly for messages • Keep in touch with VT

  9. Eligibility to start placement: • you are advised NOT to start your placement with multiple referrals still to clear • having a placement to go to does NOT overide exam results / University assessment regulation

  10. Eligibility for a sandwich degree: • 'to obtain a sandwich degree you must satisfactorily complete 48 week placement' • you are an employee - contracts can be terminated! • 2 components to the 'placement': • work experience • University assessments (20C PPM)

  11. Conduct on placement: • SHU representative • behave professionally • be pro-active

  12. Health & Safety: • Read section 3 in the general info booklet • Read the HWB H&S handbook • You will be required to take a test to show you have adequate understanding of H&S; you must pass this before you can go on placement https://shuspace.shu.ac.uk/webapps/blackboard/content/launchAssessment.jsp?course_id=_237528_1&content_id=_3312492_1&mode=view • Info in Union handbook and placement booklets

  13. Health & Safety (cont'd): • On placement you are an employee with employee's rights • H&S will feature in your Induction - complete 'provision of information, instructions and training form' after this • Employees (you!) must comply with company H&S regulations • You should declare anything which will affect your H&S or that of your work colleagues • If you have a disability you should decide when and how to disclose this information

  14. Health & Safety (cont'd): • All companies will have completed a H&S checklist before they take a student • Each placement is 'Risk Assessed' - you play a major role in this - discussed on 19th April • VT will complete a check during first visit • You should monitor H&S throughout your placement and notify your WPS and/or VT of any concerns • You must inform the University of any accident or work-related illness whilst on placement, via VT

  15. Hepatitis B vaccinations may be required: • check with employer • course of injections; ensure you complete it! • some placements may require other immunisations; occupational health will advise

  16. Contact with SHU whilst on placement: • Still a SHU student: • with assessments to complete! • must enrol online • Maintain regular contact with SHU; VT or J.Adhikari@shu.ac.uk • MUST return 'information form' within 2 weeks of starting (p2 of 'Learning Plan' ; also on Bb) • VT will make contact by phone or email

  17. Contact with SHU whilst on placement • Generally, contact point should always be VT • Contact Placement Administrator if you haven't heard from us! • Section 5 of 'General Info...' booklet covers contact • Usual contact: • initial phone or email contact by VT • VT visits within ~ 3 months of start • VT phones/emails at placement midpoint • VT visits about 4 weeks before finish • Informal email / phone contact throughout • Records kept by VT - forms in 'General Info...'booklet • You should keep a record of activity

  18. What if there are problems? • tell us - contact your VT asap • tell us before work performance is affected • VT will liaise with WPS, as appropriate • confidentiality will be respected, as much as possible • VT may need to speak to SHU colleagues e.g. CL • Placement tutor can also be contacted • All cases treated individually - guidance on Bb
