From article “In many countries, cement is critical for growth, but an enemy of green” by Elisabeth Rosenthal on October 21, 2007 on www.iht.com gluevs. green • Cement is a critical aspect of development in third-world nations for buildings and roads, but produces 5% of CO2 emissions • Process cannot be easily made “green” because the chemical process that produces cement itself releases 60% of the CO2 in the entire manufacturing process AND cement is not readily recyclable • Conflict arises in limiting India, China, and Eastern Europe’s production of cement The Global Debate on Cement Take-away message: Leaders must encourage alternative or renewable options for developing nations to provide for their needs while preserving the environment
