Goal or Purpose • Make them say, "Wow! I am glad I didn't miss this!" • Have them walk away with tools and resources needed to create positive change or action.
Content - Opening • Open with a relevant shocking statistic, quote, or point. • Hook them from the start. Get them thinking about the subject. • Get to the point early.
Content – Left and Right Brain • Challenge them mentally. • What do you want them to think? Provide step-by-step instructions. • Tug their heartstrings. What emotion will best move them to action?
Technique –Know Your Audience • Stay happy and fun • Communicate time awareness • Control their comfort if possible • Don’t talk over or under their heads • Younger audiences need visuals- Older audiences need glasses
Technique - Questioning • Pose questions to the audience • Start by learning who they are “How many people here…” • Keep them with you “What do you think happens next?” • Allow them to ask you questions • Ask questions for them
Technique -Play to your strengths • Use your voice to add emphasis • Use animation and movement to liven up your presentation • Use your own style • Tell them why you are presenting and why you’re the expert
Technique - Eye Contact • Build trust and acceptance with the audience. • Making eye contact around the room.
Technique - Humor • OK: used to get you and your audience to relax. • Can detract: Avoid jokes that might insult the audience. • The best use of humor is to tell a story about your own mishap(s)
Technique – Personal Appearance • Stand up straight and keep your shoulders up • Attend to and look at your audience, not at your presentation • Turning your back gives the illusion that you aren’t audience focused • Use body language to help
Technique - Speaking • Project your voice. • Speak slowly • Think awesome, fun and exciting! • OK to be nervous –good energy • If you are stuck, pause and think – Don’t use, “ums”, “uhs”, “ya know”
Technique - Slides • Colors: For projection:use dark background with light text • Blue=justice/truth, Green=growth, Black=strength • Typestyles • Serif for print and handouts • Sans Serif for projected text • Visuals – provides lots of images. • Use photographs if possible – more real. • Keep graphs and charts simple and big
Room/Environment • Know your equipment. Test drive! • Have a back up • Is the room Noisy, Comfortable? • What is your room layout, where are you? Where are they?
Last(ing) Impressions • Use a powerful quote or statistic • Use a striking photo to conclude your point • Provide a supporting story • Challenge the audience to act
