Why Upgrade to Drupal 7? • D5 • Drupal community no longer supports Drupal5 • No new modules • We have taken D5 to the max • D5 can be a security risk • D7 • Strong Drupal community support for D7 • Link checker • Multiple file uploads • Crop images after uploading • Web forms with conditional statements • File attachments are reusable • Drupal based registration system • Transliteration (removal of special characters for file names) • U of C access to site (single sign on) • Easy distribution of new features (no longer manual configuration) • The ability to add functionality and features with greater ease • Videos available for Apple devices Web Content Management 2
Timeline • Drupal 7 Environment Availability– November 1, 2012 • Migration Pilot – November/December 2012 • 15 – 20 sites to encompass different functionality • Feedback from the pilot will play into configuration of sites and training preparation • Communication to WCM community – October 31, 2012 • Training • Working sessions (users moving from D5 to D7) - December 2012 for pilot sites • Working sessions for new D7 users – December 2012 for pilot sites • Training Classes for D7 – January 2013 • Migration Process Begins – January 2013 • All sites migrated to D7 by the end of 2013 Web Content Management 3
Communication Plan • Communication to all Site Administrators outlining the Drupal 7 upgrade project and the pilot project (November 1, 2012) • Monthly project updates to Site Administrators • Results of the pilot project • Project progress • Timely migration information to be provided: • Date of site migration • Site responsibilities prior to migration • Date of Go Live for D7 site • Training opportunities • Follow-up with site administrators to judge satisfaction of migration process and training Web Content Management 5
Training • Drupal 5 training will continue • Drupal 7 working sessions for pilot sites – Starting December 2012 • D5 to D7 working sessions for pilot sites – Starting December 2012 • D7 training classes – January 2013 Web Content Management 6
Migration Plan • The results of the Migration Pilot will help determine migration process and schedule: • What type of timeline are we looking at for each site to be migrated? • Do you have a complicated site or a simple site to migrate? • 12 month scenario for D7 upgrade: • Preparation of existing site to be done by site administrator • General Housekeeping (cleaning outdated content) • Migration Information • Date that site migration will take place • Migration timeline – would involve freezing the site • Go live information Web Content Management 7
