  2. WHAT WERE MADISON & WASHINGTON DISAGREEING ABOUT? “In every political society, (parties) are unavoidable. A difference of interests, real or supposed, is the most natural and fruitful source of these.” -James Madison, 1792 “(Political Parties) serve to distract and (weaken the government). Parties (stir up) the community with ill founded jealousies and false alarms.” -George Washington, 1796

  3. WASHINGTON’S FAREWELL ADDRESS WHAT ADVICE WAS HE OFFERING AS HE LEFT OFFICE? “It is our true policy to steer clear of permanent alliances with any portion of the foreign world; so far as we are now at liberty to do it; for let me not be understood as capable of patronizing infidelity to existing engagements. I hold the maxim (principle) no less applicable to the public than to private affairs, that honesty is always the best policy. I repeat it, therefore, let those engagements be observed in their genuine sense. But, in my opinion, it is unnecessary and would be unwise to extend them…”

  4. COURT CASES REVISITED • Marbury vs. Madison (1803) • Established the Supreme Court’s power to judge the constitutionality of laws-Judicial Review • Gibbons vs. Ogden (1824) • The regulation of interstate commerce • Worchester vs. Georgia • Heard under Chief Justice John Marshall • Concerned the relationship between the Cherokee people and a state • The Court ordered that Indian nations were subject to federal, not state law.

  5. What does this quote have to do with? “The Cherokees are nearly all prisoners. They have been dragged from their homes and encamped at the forts and military places, all over the nation…The properties of many (have) been taken and sold before their eyes for almost nothing.” -quote from an eyewitness

  6. ORDER OF EVENTS • LEWIS AND CLARK EXPEDITION • INDIAN REMOVAL ACT • TRAIL OF TEARS • SENECA FALLS CONVENTION

  7. OTHER NOTES • The South thought it would make it more difficult to export crops if Congress enacted high tariffs. Why? • During 1800’s • Construction of Canals • Use of steamboats on rivers • Construction of toll roads • Many states had put an end to property qualifications which resulted in an increase in voters between the election of 1824 & 1828
