Where do you stand? • You will be given 2 statements. • You will decide as to which statement you agree with most. • Those of you who agree with statement #1 will stand on one side of the room, while those who agree with statement #2 will stand on the other side. • If you are unsure, or in between, you will stand in the middle.

Warm up Statement #1 Statement #2 • “To increase safety & reduce the cost to taxpayers of supporting fire departments, laws should exist mandating that ALL homeowners own working smoke detectors” “Its an imposition on individual freedom for the govt. to require citizens to purchase a product, including smoke detectors. Individuals should have the freedom to make their own choices

  4. Discuss • Volunteers to share their viewpoint. • Offer reasons as to why the “other side” should take into consideration your position. • Does anyone want to change sides?

  5. What would it mean if? • What would it mean if laws about fire safety reflected the values represented on one side of the line or the other? • What would either side mean for: • Firefighters, homeowners, smoke detector manufacturers, citizens in general • How might these various people be affected by how laws are written and enforced?

  7. Obama Care • Signed March 23, 2010, The Affordable Health Care Act or federal health reform was a 900 + page act that was designed to make health care available to everyone in the U.S.

  8. affordable care actFacts • Increased coverage – About 32 million Americans who would not have been covered by health insurance will be covered by 2014. • Americans who don’t pay for insurance will be taxed 1% of their income in 2014. In 2015 that will jump to 2% and in 2016 will increase to 2.5%. • Individuals who make over $200,000 and couples who make over $250, 000 a year will pay higher taxes to help cover costs of the program. • There will be an estimated shortage of health care professionals due to the fact of the aging population which will prevent people from receiving medical care. • Estimated that visits to the doctor will increase from 462 million to 565 million by 2025, further straining the system. • The Congressional Budget Office estimates that the implementation of this act will cost the American people $1.2 TRILLION over the next 10 years.

Supreme Court • In June 2012, a historic case was heard that engages with the tension between COMUNAL GOOD & INDIVIDUAL FREEDOMS. • Affordable Health Care A.K.A “Obama Care” • The law was challenged by 26 states & led by Florida. • Issue: “May the federal government compel individuals not engaged in commerce to buy a product, here health insurance, from private companies? • Obama Administration Issue: Can Congress decide to regulate how people pay for health care that they will inevitably need.
