  3. General George McClellan • Great and able organizer • Believer in unending drill • Popular amongst his soldiers • Lincoln promoted McClellan to General in Chief of all armies

  4. McClellan’s Faults • Placed Allan Pinkerton in charge • Military Intelligence • Miscalculated often • Confederate numbers at double or triple strength • When will we fight?

  5. Battle of Shiloh (TN) • Major General Ulysses S. Grant (Union) • General Albert Johnston (CSA) • General Beauregard (CSA) • Union victory • Military stores/fortresses in Union hands

  6. Anger and Frustration • Union victories • Shiloh (Tennessee) • New Madrid, Missouri • Capture of Forts Henry and Donelson (opened TN river) • Generals Halleck and McClellan moved slowly

Lee was took charge of CSA
