Aims & Objectives By the end of this session you will be: • Able to follow the correct procedure for storing & administering the seasonal flu vaccine for staff. • Able to undertake staff seasonal flu vaccination. • Have an understanding of the planned ??? vaccination • Able to consent and document vaccine administration and report to the OHD

4. Flu vaccination Process • The vaccination is an attenuated vaccine that has to be given annually to take into account the changes in the virus. Please see information sheet for further information about side effects and contra indications. Vaccination process • A small stock of vaccination should be kept in the fridge of your department & stored between 2-8OC • Further vaccinations can be obtained from pharmacy – any issues contact Nick Bolton on 41864/41443 • All vaccinations need to be carried out in a private area away from other staff and patients. • Ensure you have read, understood and completed the PGD Appendix 1. • Ensure checklist has been read and understood & the consent section is completed

5. Flu vaccination Process • Allow the vaccination to reach room temperature • Give the vaccination in the deltoid area of the arm either intramuscular or subcutaneously • Complete the consent form. • There is no reason why the staff member should not return to work immediately • Universal precautions should be taken at all times and all sharps should be disposed of appropriately • Any concerns please contact Occupational Health • The crash team (2222) should be called in cases where there is suspected anaphylaxis Please note • Any staff member who is not comfortable about a colleague giving them a vaccine should attend occupation health. • There have been no documented cases of anaphylaxis following flu vaccination in staff reported at HEFT • Please post or fax the completed consent form to occupational health BHH fax 424 3044 SHH fax 424 5118 GHH fax 424 9863.

6. Checklist to be completedPrior to administration • Are you allergic to eggs? Anaphylactic reaction-do not give vaccination, mild allergies i.e rash, vaccine may still be given. • Do you have any allergies? NB: vaccine is latex free Defer individual to Occupational Health if any concerns. • Have you had the flu vaccine since march 2012? Do not administer if flu vaccine has been administered since this date. • Are you pregnant? The vaccine is deemed safe to give to people who are pregnant. • Are you generally in good health today? Minor illnesses without fever or systemic upset are not valid reasons to defer immunisation. The vaccine is also recommended for individuals who are immuno-supressed although their antibody response may not be as strong.

7. Seasonal Flu Vaccination • Enzira Influenza Vaccine • A/California/7/2009(H1N1) • A/Victoria/361/2011(H3N2) –like virus. • B/Winconsin/1/2010 – like virus. • It will take 7 – 10 days body make anti-bodies
