  1. Pleonasm • Pleonasm- relates to kids and how they use more words than necessary.

  2. Polysyndeton • Poly sends a lot of messages adding “and then” • … and then we went to the movies, and then we went to pet smart

  3. Simile • Definition: A figure of speech in which two essentially unlike things are compared, often in a phrase introduced by like or as. • Example: She is like a rose. • My way to remember it: “Smile LIKE me”

  4. Syllepsis • Definition: Use of a word with two others, with each of which is understood differently. • Example: ACHOO! I have a cold -> It’s cold in here-> You're so cold. • My way to remember: Kiss-> Hershey’s Kiss-> Listen to Kiss

  5. Synecdoche (Sin-eck-do-key) • Understanding one thing with another; the use of a part for the whole, or the whole for the part. • Connect and see how a part of the whole can open you up to Synecdoche! • “Hey man, nice wheels!” When the person comments on the wheels, he really is referring to the entire car, not just the wheels. Definition: Example:

  6. Synesis (Sin-ee-sus) • The agreement of words according to logic, and not by the grammatical form. • It’s a sin to normally use grammar wrong, but not with synesis! • "Most of the audience were standing, and the house was in a buzz of conversation and expectation."An audience is a singular noun and should have “was” instead of “were”. Definition: Example:

  7. Tautology • Repetition of an idea in a different word, phrase, or sentence

  8. Give me some of you tots! • Tater tots and hashbrowns.

  9. Zeugma • Two different words linked to a verb or an adjective which is strictly appropriate to only one of them

  10. The woman opened the door and her heart to the child.
