Special Topics Flow in a Channel Connecting Two Reservoirs
Flow in a channel connecting two reservoirs • Several flow situations are possible that depend on system configuration and parameters • Slope of the channel bottom may be mild or steep • Channel length may be short or long (short if the gradually varied flow profile extends to the upstream reservoir)
Flow in a channel connecting two reservoirsMild bottom slope • Cases: • Upstream reservoir level constant, downstream reservoir level variable • Downstream reservoir level constant, upstream reservoir level variable • Constant discharge, both upstream and downstream reservoir levels variable
Upstream reservoir level constant, downstream reservoir level variable • Delivery curve, channel discharge and the downstream reservoir level • Negative flow from downstream reservoir towards upstream reservoir • Uniform discharge (Choudhry, 2008)
Upstream reservoir level constant, downstream reservoir level variable • The channel discharge is zero (point b) • The channel discharge is (point c), flow depth is equal throughout channel, Manning or any other similar equation • Channel discharge and the water level in the channel if the downstream reservoir level (between b and c or below c) – Trial and error or simultaneous solution approach (Choudhry, 2008)
