The plant is designed to treat all effluent streams from the Medina Plantof total flow 370 m3 /day. The treatment plant operation is based on three approaches: Physical-Chemical treatment Biological treatment Physical treatment Each approach is represented by a specific technological stage, arranged in the following order: Wastewater Treatment Plant at Medina
Stage 1. Physical-Chemical Treatment Wastewater Treatment Plant at Medina Diversion tank Balance tank pH correction and reagent tank Dissolved Air Flotation
Stage 2. Biological treatment Wastewater Treatment Plant at Medina Large aeration tank Part 1 Part 2 Silos
Stage 3. Physical treatment Wastewater Treatment Plant at Medina BIOVIS Continuous Flow Separator and BIOVIS Polystyrene Media Filter
What happens at the 1st treatment stage? Effluent from the production area arrives to the balance tank Wastewater Treatment Plant at Medina If effluent is too high in COD, then it is diverted into a separate tank Effluent from the balance tank is pH corrected, reagents added Conditioned effluent is treated in a Dissolved Air Flotation Unit to remove the bulk of solids
What happens at the 2nd treatment stage? Effluent from the DAF unit arrives to 1st aeration tank Wastewater Treatment Plant at Medina Effluent from the 1st aeration tank arrives to three consecutively connected silos Biological degradation of solid and dissolved organics occurs at this stage
What happens at the 3rd treatment stage? Sludge is separated and returned to 1st aeration tank Wastewater Treatment Plant at Medina Clarified water overflows to the filter Clarified water is filtered to produce final effluent
Wastewater characteristics: BOD and COD • Natural organic detritus and organic waste from wastewater are a food source for water-borne bacteria. • Bacteria consume these organic materials using dissolved oxygen. • BOD is a measure of the amount of oxygen that bacteria will consume under aerobic conditions. • COD does not differentiate between biologically available and inert organic matter, and it is a measure of the total quantity of oxygen required to chemically break down (oxidize) all organic material into carbon dioxide and water. • COD values are always greater than BOD values.
