Policies and Procedures • Today we will discuss the policies and procedures that will guide our classroom environment. • There are procedures for everything in life • Each teacher does things a little differently. This is how I would like things to run in our classroom. • These policies and procedures are in place to make sure that every day in class is productive and enjoyable. • Failure to follow the policies and procedures will have written and unwritten consequences, which I will discuss with you later.
What are the expectations? • Be on time. • Be prepared with all necessary materials. • Procedures, procedures, procedures. Remember and perform them! • Be respectful of the teacher, your classmates, and yourself. • Understand that you are always responsible for how you act, no matter what.
#1: Be on time • You should be in your seat and you should be following the start of class procedures as soon as entering the class. (When the 2nd bell rings if 1st period.) • Continual tardiness will result in a phone call home and eventually being written up. • If you are tardy because you are discussing something with another teacher, you must have a signed note/pass from that teacher explaining why you are tardy.
# 2: Be prepared • Materials needed for my class: • Binder with paper and dividers • Pens (blue or black) or sharpened pencils • Red pens for correcting work • Vocabulary workbook and flashcards • Literature textbook (covered by 8/19/13) • Literature workbook • AR book
# 3: Procedures! (slides 9-27) • If you follow the procedures we have in place for this classroom, it will make our learning experience so much better! • Following procedures cuts out wasting class time on unnecessary questions. • The less class time we waste, the more time we will have for enjoyable, creative experiences. • The exact procedures will be outlined in later slides (9-27).
#4: Be respectful • Respect your teacher: Do not speak when the teacher is speaking. Any questions you may have can be addressed during independent work time or when the teacher asks for questions. Raise Hands!! • Respect others: This is common sense. Keep your hands and feet to yourself! Be mindful of how you speak to others. Would you want them speaking that way to you? Don’t touch anyone else’s property unless you are given permission by that person. • Respect yourself: It’s ok to ask questions that are important to what we are learning. Believe in yourself. Don’t make others think less of you by using inappropriate/silly language.
# 5: Understand • You are responsible for your actions. No one can “make” you feel a certain way. You are in charge of your feelings and your reactions to those feelings. • As the wise Eleanor Roosevelt said: “No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.” • Before you act (or react), think. Chances are, the consequences will definitely overshadow any temporary satisfaction you get out of your action/reaction. • Ask yourself: Would you want to be treated that way?
Morning Procedures (Homeroom) • Go to your locker and pack all necessary materials for the first part of your day; keep talking to a minimum • Enter the classroom quietly, check the lunch menu if necessary, and change your name on the SMART board to the appropriate column • Take your assigned seat, unpack the supplies necessary for my class. Your school bag goes under your feet or your seat and is not to be opened during class without permission. • Check your bookbag/folder for anything that might need to go to the office and place it in the plastic bin on the shelf by my computer. • Write down any homework in your tracker and begin your journal/bellwork when I change the screen on the SMART board.
What if I’m tardy? • On time = in your seat and completely prepared to begin class (already packed) when announcements start. • If you are seated at 8:00 am but not packed, you are considered tardy. • Those not in the room by 8:00 will be asked to remain in the hallway until prayers and announcements are finished. • You will be allowed to pack after prayer and announcements. There is a tardy sign-in sheet (by restroom sign-out) where you will write your name, the date, and the time you arrived. • Those coming to school after 8:10 must get a tardy slip from the office.
How do we start class? • Enter class quietly • Take your assigned seat and begin unpacking all necessary materials for my class (tracker, binder, pen/pencil, textbook and workbook). Your school bag goes under your feet or your seat and is not to be opened during class without permission. • Write down your homework or important information in your tracker. • Begin your journal/bellwork. • Prayer and announcements (participate in prayer and pay attention during announcements)
What is “Give Me Five?” • When the teacher signals “Give Me Five” by raising her hand with all five fingers out, she wants you to stop talking and listen. • See sign on board.
When may I use the restroom? • You may use the restroom during independent work time, at the teachers’ discretion. • Raise your hand and using the correct signal, on the board. • Sign out on the appropriate sign-out sheet (clip board) indicating the time you left. • You are allowed two trips to the restroom per week. • Once again, restroom use is at the teachers’ discretion.
When may I leave the room? • During the first week of school, you may return to your locker to retrieve something if it’s absolutely necessary. • After the first week of school, you will not be allowed to return to your locker. Those that are habitually unprepared for class will loose points on the behavior. Being prepared is an expectation. Failure to follow these results in a consequence. • If there is an emergency, please raise your and wait to speak with me directly. • You will not be allowed to get items left in another teacher’s class, unless we are changing classes.
When may I leave my seat? • When you use the appropriate signal, you will be asked, “What do you need?” • You will then be given an answer and/or directions. Follow them. • If you need to dispose of trash, please hold it in your desk until you are dismissed at the end of class. If it is from a project/activity, I’ll give directions about trash disposal.
How do we dissmiss? • About two minutes (2-minuite countdown) before the bell, you will need to: • Make sure you have written down all assignments and understand what you need to do for the next day. • Quietly empty your desk of all materials and pack them in your schoolbag. • Make sure you pick up any trash in and around your desk and throw it away on your way out. • When it is time to go, the teacher will have you line up quietly at the door. • THE TEACHER DISMISSES YOU. THE BELL DOES NOT.
What if I’m absent? • If you are absent, if possible, please have someone notify the office so that we may collect your work for you. Please have that person let the office know if someone will be picking up your work at the end of the day. • If your work isn’t picked up, it will be available for you upon your return in the back of the room. It can be found in the “Student Forms” box by the AR computers. • If you have any questions regarding the work, please ask the teacher or another student after school.
Make-up work/tests • I will follow the student handbook regarding the length of time you will be given to make up a test or missing work. • I will give make-up tests at activity or after school from 3:15-3:30 on my extra help days. • If more time is needed, we will make arrangements as needed.
How do we act when a visitor is in the room? • All visitors to our classroom deserve to be treated with respect. • If a faculty member or administrator (an adult) is in the room, it is respectful to stand and say “Good morning/afternoon, (Mr./Mrs. ____), God Bless you.” Please sit and continue your work quietly while I speak with that person. • When another student enters the room, it is disrespectful to shout out, etc. at that person unnecessarily. Doing so will result in loosing conduct points.
What do we do for group work? • You will be asked to work in groups in my class. • Working well with others is an important life skill. Regardless of how you feel about another group member, treat them with respect. • I will always assign groups. Changing group assignment is up to the teacher only. • Those not working cooperatively will be removed from the group and will loose conduct points.
When can we use the art supplies? • You may use the art supplies (back cabinet) when we are working on a class project that requires them. • Art supplies are not to be used for personal projects or for projects for another class. • I will call a few people at a time to get supplies at the time that they are needed to avoid crowding. • Please treat the supplies with respect and make sure they are put back in their proper place when finished!
Journals • You must have a chapter (library) book for the completion of your journal, everyday! It can be your AR book. • You will be given a set amount of time to read and a question or 2 to answer about your book. Answer these in you journal neatly and completely. • I will check your work while we discuss your answers either as a class or as a small group.
Vocabulary Cards • You will be assigned the new unit on a Monday. Those cards will be due for a grade by the following Friday. Using class time to work on them is preferred. • Front of the card: word and pronunciation key written neatly. Also, write/draw something to help you remember the word. • Back of the card: all definitions for all parts of speech, all synonyms, and all antonyms • This will be a 15 point class work grade. Other projects for vocabulary may be assigned during the unit as needed.
AR test • When you finish a book, ask permission to get an AR form. • Fill out the AR form completely and neatly (including the summary paragraph). • When given permission, you may turn it in to the hand-in tray. • When I have finished checking it, I’ll give you instructions as to when and where to take the test. • After the test, file the form in your class portfolio in the back of the room.
What do I do when I finish my work? • If you are finished your work in a neat, well-organized manner, you may do the following: • Work on a current assignment for my class (ex: vocabulary cards). • Work on any homework we might have in my class. (ex: studying vocabulary) • Read an AR book. • If you have done all of these things, only then may you: • Work on homework for another class.
Lost and found? • You are responsible for your materials. If you choose to leave an item in the desk, it will be put in a box on the back shelf. • Anything left for more than two days will be brought down to lost and found by the cafeteria. • Please do not interrupt class time to collect something you left. Please come to get your things between classes or after school.
Extra help? • Sometimes we need a little extra explanation. I am more than happy to provide extra help or answer any questions you may have. • My extra help days are Monday thru Thursday from 3:15-3:30 and activity class. • If you come for extra help, please sign the notebook (by the bathroom sign-out) at the end of class (as you leave) and be prepared when you arrive with any homework/assignments you need help on.
