Solution to Prob. 3 From Homework #4 By Group # 3 Curtis Chasey, Carl Chaifetz, Matt Grimes, Pete Mulvey, Ashley Dickerson
Problem # 3 • What is the mass fraction of oxygen in air? • Assumption from problem # 2: Air is21 % oxygen (O2) 79 % nitrogen (N2)
Average Molecular Weight of Air yi- mole fraction of each component mi - molecular weight of each component m - average molecular weight of air
Molecular Weights Oxygen = 15.994 g/mol Oxygen gas (O2) = 2*15.994 = 31.998 g/mol Nitrogen = 14.0067 g/mol Nitrogen gas (N2) = 2*14.0067 = 28.013 g/mol
Mole Fractions • Prob. 2 states air is 21 % Oxygen and 79 % Nitrogen on a mole basis • 0.21 = Mole fraction of Oxygen • 0.79 = Mole fraction of Nitrogen
Avg. Molecular weight Air =(0.21 * 31.998) + (0.79 * 28.013) = 28.85 g/mol Air Now that we have the average molecular weight of air we can calculate the mass fraction of oxygen.
Mass Fraction of Oxygen • Mass Fraction (O2) =
0.21 mol O2 per 1 mol Air = 0.233
