  2. 1 Corinthians 1:17 • Paul was NOT Sent to Baptize • Therefore, baptism is NOT a part of the gospel, • And baptism is NOT essential for salvation Romans 1:16

  3. QUESTIONS: • IF Paul was not sent to baptize, did he sin in baptizing Crispus, Gaius and the household of Stephanas? (1 Corinthians 1:14,16) • IF Paul had been sent to baptize, would this mean that baptism IS essential to salvation? • John was sent to baptize - John 1:33 • Was his baptism necessary? Matthew 3:15

  4. Great Commission Sent to Baptize • Matthew 28:18-20 “baptizing them” • IS the baptism of the Great Commission essential to salvation? • Did Paul labor under the Great Commission?

  5. What 1 Corinthians 1:17 DOES NOT SAY: • Does NOT deny that baptism is a part of the Gospel- • Acts 16:13-15 “she and her household were baptized” • Acts 16:31-34 “he and all his family were baptized” • Acts 18:8 “hearing, believed and were baptized”

Jesus taught the Apostles to Preach the Gospel to the World • Mark 16:15,16 “all the world” • Acts 8:35 Philip “preached Jesus” to the Ethiopian. • Vs 36 He asked to be Baptized • Baptism is part of the Gospel & of the preaching of Jesus • Romans 6:3-5; Galatians 3:26,27; Ephesians 5:25,26; Colossians 2:11,12

  11. Gnostics of 2nd & 3rd Century Denied Baptism • Tertullian – cir. 160-255 AD • “On Baptism, Chapter XIV” • “For preaching is the prior thing, baptizing the posterior. Therefore the preaching came first: but I think baptizing withal was lawful to him to whom preaching was.”

  12. Deny Baptism = Antichrist • 1 John 2:18-22 “he is antichrist who denies the Father and the Son” • 1 John 4:3 “the spirit of the Antichrist,… is now already in the world.” • Do we want to accept the view of the Gnostics?
