Requirements • PC (Not Mac) with Windows NT or later • 128 MB RAM or more • 100 MB free hard disk space • Write access to installation drive • USB Port (if using flash drive) • Connection to Internet Analyzing Poverty June 22-26, 2009
Installation Note • PDQ-Explore is designed to run as a client on a PC that has Internet access to our PDQ server in Ann Arbor: pdq.psc.isr.umich.edu • By default the installation files should be copied to: • C:\Program Files\PDQ • NPC Computing lab machines do not allow write access to the C: drive. • Thus, PDQ-Explore has been installed on Drive M: (user IFS file space) and on Drive E: (external USB flash drive). Starting PDQ-Explore • Open My Computer and the M: Drive • Open the PDQ Folder • Double-Click on explore.exe • Or: Start, Run, m:\pdq\explore.exe • If using the flash drive, insert the flash drive in the USB port and proceed as above using Drive E: rather than Drive M:. • Note: The USB Drive letter is machine dependent Analyzing Poverty June 22-26, 2009
Getting Started • Confirm server: pdq.psc.isr.umich.edu • No subscriber name/password is required • Enter/Enter/Enter until “Open” window appears • Double-Click on “npc” workspace • Select and expand “ipacs08” data set • Expand “housing” or “person” variable list • Browse through variable list • Open IPUMS documentation: http://usa.ipums.org/usa Analyzing Poverty June 22-26, 2009
Set Up Query • Select a data set (ipacs08) • Right click (or click on the “Query” tab) • Click on “Setup New Expert Query” • Setup window opens • Fill in the blanks (see the following slides and related handouts) • Click on the “Results” tab Analyzing Poverty June 22-26, 2009
