Please follow these directions while I complete attendance: Grab ONE of each of the colored squares by the door and place your answer to the following questions on each. Orange: Why is reading important? Brown: When is reading difficult? Yellow: How do you understand what you read? Blue: How can you remember what you read?
Pass the Bucket • What did you say about the importance of reading? • What did you say about the challenges of reading? • How do you make sure to understand what you’re reading? • How do you remember what you read?
The Goal: • Students should be able to independently read new content for comprehension. This just means that if you are assigned reading, you should be able to successfully read, understand, connect, and share the experience with others in an interesting and intellectual way.
Step 1: Pre ReadingC.S.I. Check your attitude • Make the best of it. It won’t kill you. If nothing else, you may learn something new. Scan for Clues -Pictures, Headings, Titles, and Graphics Investigate Vocabulary -Are there any unfamiliar terms or words?
Step 2: Actively Read • While Reading… • Pause and paraphrase by paragraph/sentence • Recognize your questions • Make Connections to prior knowledge/experience • Agree and disagree • Search for relevance
Step 3: Reflect • As soon as you finish, ask yourself… • “What did this mean?” • “Why did I read this?” • “When might this be useful?” • “How can I remember the key points?” • “What were the main ideas?”
Step 4: Report • Once the answers are clear to you, you need to share. • Talk to someone-a friend or relative • Write down your thoughts-a journal or notes • Focus only on the MAIN points in a summary. • Feel free to add your personal insights and reactions, but don’t let them color the content inaccurately. You’ll need proof.
What now? • Practice: • One article as a class • One article for homework Bring your Student ID on Monday. We’re going to the Media Center
