Steps in the Curriculum Development Process 1. Specify goals 2. Assess needs 3. Determine demand, and 4. Continue through planning, implementation and evaluation.
New Curriculum Development Committee (NCDC) Primary Purpose: Assist faculty members with new and revised course, certificate and program development. Technical Assistance is provided.
NCDC Committee Concerns 1. Recommend curricula that are current and targeted to student and employer needs; and 2. Tailor new curricula to focus on specific skill sets.
Submission Process 1. Proposal Preparation 2. Assistance in Proposal Preparation (NCDC Committee) 3. Department Review & Approval 4. Internal/External Review & Approval 5. Divisional AAD Review & Approval
Submission Process (Cont.) 6. AVPAA Review & Approval 7. Submission to the College-Wide Curriculum Committee (CWCC).
Role of the CWCC 1. To collaboratively review and recommend new courses, certificate and degree programs to the EVPAA. 2. To make recommendations related to: • Curriculum policy and procedure • Development, Implementation & Evaluation • Exploring proposed curricula.
Review Process Areas for Review: Educational Merit Instructional Priority Budget implication Need as documented in proposal. Reasons for Review: Transferability Potential SUNY Gen Ed Course Elective in a growing field Duplication of courses.
CWCC Approval Process Actions to be taken: 1. Recommended. 2. Recommended pending minor changes. 3. Tabled pending more substantial changes.
CWCC Approval Process (Cont.) Proposals will pass the CWCC if approved by a simple majority of voting members present. The CWCC has only recommending power.
Final Decision of the CWCC 1. Final originator of proposal will be told of Committee’s decision at the CWCC Meeting when proposal is reviewed. 2. Once proposal has been approved, Chair of the CWCC notifies EVPAA in writing. 3. EVPAA completes the approval process both internally (BOT) and externally (SED).
In Summary The CWCC: 1. Provides support to academic departments. 2. Provides written examples of approved curriculum materials as needed. 3. Welcomes all faculty members and administrators to their monthly meetings, and 4. Can be the friend you’ve been looking for!
