  1. Development of Comfort Conditioning and Appliance Systems for the University of Illinois Solar Decathlon 2007 Entry www.eere.energy.gov/solar_decathlon/solar_decathlon_2007.html www.solardecathlon.uiuc.edu

  2. Solar Decathlon 2007 • Intense competition to design, construct and transport an 800 sq ft (80 m2) solar powered house to the National Mall in Washington DC • 20 teams • MIT/CMU/Cornell/UColorado/CalPoly/Darmstadt/…. • Extensive cross campus interactions • Architecture, Industrial Design, Natural Resources, Communications, Education • Sponsored by US DOE and NREL

  3. Solar Decathlon Competition • The competition will be held over a 3 week period on the National Mall in Washington DC in August/September, 2007 • ~ 30 students will attend • 1 week construction • 1 week competition activities • 1 week of deconstruction • Between 100,000 and 200,000 visitors will visit the house on the Mall • Over 100 million person contacts through TV, radio and print media (featured on “This Old House” and HGTV)

  4. Schedule • Spring, 2006 - faculty organization and fund raising • Summer, 2006 - begin design “charrettes”, building simulation, and system prototyping activities • Fall, 2006 - building design concepts finalized and building component construction begins • Continued system component development and testing • Spring, 2007 – completion of building and building component construction • Summer, 2007 – Building performance testing • August-September 2007 – Competition!

  5. Design Features • What could HVAC&R and appliance systems look like? • The Solar Decathlon will be an opportunity to mix architects, industrial designers and engineers together 1935 Globetop refrigerator and a Porsche exemplify design excellence A natural convection condenser

  6. Opportunities – Comfort Conditioning • Independent operation and control of cooling, heating, ventilation and moisture loading • Solar assisted heat pump panels? • High glide zeotrope for ventilation exchanger? • Green refrigerants Heatpump/AC Dehumidifier Ventilation

  7. Wire-on-Tube Heat Exchangers • Back of refrigerator condensers … use for heat pump/AC system • ~28 inches x 51 inches • Could use 4 to 6 on ceiling and similar number on roof for heat pump/AC system • Will build prototype this fall for size/performance information • Ceiling fan for airflow and efficiency?

  8. Heat Exchangers We Can Make • Dehumidifier?? • Water condenses on cooling surface • Flows down to drain (or plant for watering)?

  9. Opportunities - Appliance Design • Eliminate resistance and gas heaters • Gas price will continue to increase • Electric resistance inefficient • Independent water heating of clothes washer and dishwasher allows efficient temperature control for each application • Eliminate hot water line installation • Disconnect shower use from appliance use Freezer Refrigerator Dishwasher Clothes washer dryer Water heater

  10. Opportunities - Appliance Design • How would you design a refrigerator or freezer? • Separate compartments? • Style • Use condenser panel as a wall partition or screen? • ???

  11. Ubiquitous Computing System • Computer Science Faculty and Students will develop a “pervasive” (also called “ubiquitous”) computing system • Integrated into the house for a variety of tasks • Read weather forecasts from Internet to determine best way to prepare for house loads • Monitor location and number of people to control ventilation • System diagnostics and troubleshooting • Variety of sensors integrated into house (Intel “floor”, camera, infrared, RFID, acoustic, etc) • “Hal” (2001 Space Odyssey) was born in Urbana, IL

  12. Wow Factors • Sounds system • Television • Computing • Exercise • Relaxation • Lighting • ???? • We need you!
