International Baccalaureate (IB)Magnet Program • Lanier Middle School is a whole school International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Program (MYP) School. We have been an authorized IBMYP middle school since 2003, and were the first in HISD to have this designation. In addition to adhering to state and district curriculum, Lanier also incorporates the IB curriculum into all of our classrooms. The IBMYP is a 5 year program. The first 3 years of the program are here at Lanier at the final two years are offered at Lamar High School. Lamar High School and Bellaire High School also offer the IB Diploma Program (DP) in grades 11 and 12. Students who graduate high school with an IB DP diploma can enter university with 24-52 hours of college credit. Lanier’s IB MYP is designed to build a frame work for students to be able to succeed in the IB continuum. We focus on the IB Learner Profile to encourage our students to be life long learners, the areas of interaction to show students global context of learning, and criterion based assessment in the form of rubrics. • Lanier is an HISD Vanguard Magnet school. 2/3 of our students are magnet students (around 980 of our 1400 students). The vanguard curriculum is an accelerated curriculum that allows students to finish 6-8th grade curriculum in 2 years so that by the time they enter the 8th grade they are taking high school credit courses in math (algebra),science (IPC), and foreign language. Our vanguard classes also meet the IB curriculum standards. Students must qualify as GT students to be eligible to take part in the vanguard program.
Special Education • Lanier Middle School has a continuum of services designed to meet the needs of individual learners. Services range from case managers monitoring mainstreamed students to self-contained classes, where the students spend more than 50% of the day in special education classes. • H.I.S.D. believes in inclusion. Special education and general education teachers are given training and support to ensure students can and do learn at Lanier. Individual Education Programs (IEPs) are developed to meet the specific needs of each special education student.
Special Education Services(Inclusion) • Resource Classes There are resource classes for students identified through the ARD committee who need off-grade level instruction or small group instruction in the areas of Reading and/or Math. Resource teachers also help develop IEPs so that students are able to master Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) at their functional level. Our staff is knowledgeable and receives specific content area training annually. • Co-Teacher ServicesStudents receive cooperative interactive instruction from both general and Special Education teachers in the general education classroom. • Content Mastery ServicesStudents with disabilities who are enrolled in general-education classes receive instructional support and assistive services for their general-education classes
Special Education Services(Self Contained) Programs and Services: • Life Skills Students identified by the ARD committee with severe disabilities are given assistance so they can learn in functional environments. Students are taught skills necessary for daily living. Students are actively engaged in the community. Students spend over half the day in specialized classes, and participate with peers during curricular and extracurricular activities. • Structured Learning Class The structured learning environment is designed for students identified as autistic who benefit help and prepare the skills needed to meet the challenges of the general education classroom. Structured teaching utilizes visual cues which help children with autism focus on the relevant information which can, at times, be difficult for the person with autism to distinguish from the non-relevant information.
Lanier Language Policy(ELL Program and Foreign Languages Offered) • All Lanier Middle School teachers are language teachers in an urban inner-city whole school model of the MYP. The language of instruction at Lanier Middle School is English. Lanier Middle School serves a very diverse student population from a wide variety of backgrounds and cultures, we provide English instruction for non-English speaking and limited-English speaking students through our ELL program. Currently 67 students are considered to be English Language Learners and 90 monitor students who have been exited from the ELL program in the last year or two. We recognize that Lanier Middle School must provide for these students the language of instruction and at the same time stress the importance of mother-tongue maintenance and development. • The role of language plays an extremely important role in teaching and learning at Lanier Middle School. The role of the English language and the study of other languages have a special significance in the MYP programme design here at Lanier Middle School. English shall be considered Language A, and French, German, Mandarin and Spanish shall be considered our Language B. Lanier offers different levels of second languages which meets the needs of our diverse population. All students work to acquire at least one other language in addition to their mother-tongue. Currently we service students whose mother tongues are Spanish, Vietnamese, Chinese, Russian, Korean, Thai, Farsi, German and Portuguese.
