  6. Course Goals • DEFINE the fundamentals of radiation, radioactive material, ionization, and contamination. • DESCRIBE the indicators, signs, and symptoms of exposure to radiation.

  7. Course Goals(continued) • RECOGNIZE the presence of radiological materials from radiological postings (colors and symbols), container shapes/types, or unusual signs that may indicate the threat of a radiological incident, and appropriately COMMUNICATE the need for additional resources during a radiological incident.

  8. Course Goals(continued) • DESCRIBE the radiological/nuclear threat of weapons of mass destruction (WMD) and its potential impact on the community.

  9. Training Focus Awareness Level Training Personnel who are likely to: • Witness a WMD incident or, • Initially investigate report

  10. Levels of Training Awareness • Recognize hazardous materials incidents • Protocols to detect radiological materials • Self-protection measures • Protecting a potential crime scene • Security and control procedures • Contact dispatcher or higher authorities to report and to request additional assistance or emergency response personnel

  11. Levels of Training Operations • Awareness Level training • Incident Command System and Unified Command System procedures for integration and implementation • Self-protection measures and rescue and evacuation procedures for WMD incidents • Procedures for working at the scene of a potential WMD incidents

  12. Levels of Training Technician (HazMat Technician) • Awareness Level and Performance Level A training (and other specialized training) • Self-protection measures and rescue and evacuation procedures for WMD incidents • Perform specialized work at the scene of a potential WMD incident • Incident Command System and Unified Command System procedures for integration and implementation

  13. Awareness Level Generally, all actions by these personnel are conducted from within the cold zone (uncontaminated areas). If in the warm or hot zone: • Move from that zone • Encourage others to move to a staging area away from threat • Minimize further contamination

  14. Awareness Level Remember: Awareness-Level training does NOT qualify you to: • Perform decontamination • Operate radiation detectors • Take offensive actions in a contaminated WMD environment
