Personal Responsibility: Handling Difficult Issues and Situations 7th -8th grades
Controversial issues • There are many issues that we face that do not have right or wrong answers. • Our values and characteristics influence the decisions we make and the stands that we take on controversial issues. • As we discuss some of these issues today, be honest about your thoughts and feelings AND be respectful of others’ opinions.
Discussion guidelines • There are no right or wrong answers • You will have 2 to 3 minutes to discuss each question • Be respectful • Speak one-at-a-time
Discussion questions • Do violent video games encourage violence? • Would you continue to hang out with your close friend who you spend a lot of time with and who was just diagnosed with AIDS? • Which situation is more likely to put you in danger? • Getting a ride home from someone you just met at a party • Meeting someone in person who you have met on the internet but have no idea who they are • Spending the weekend with friends who you suspect will be partying (drinking and/or doing drugs) and your parents are out of town

Making decisions and taking a stand • When faced with controversial issues it is important to be considerate of other’s opinions but be able to have your own ideas. • Many different things influence the way we think and feel. It is up to you to make your own decisions and form your own opinions.
