Utdanning.no(translated: www.education.no) A governmental service-oriented repository strategy. Trond Håvard Hanssen thh@utdanning.no Project manager Learning objects repository Learning content publishing
Utdanning.no • Owned by the Norwegian Ministry of Education and Research. • The website is a national common gateway that provides easy access to everything you need to know about education. • Utdanning.no has no governing authority but is coordinating The Norwegian Cooperation of Websites in the Educational sector (SANU). • Utdanning.no website is all designed on open source software.
Service-oriented strategy “Everything you need to know about education in on place.” • This is solved with technology and not editorial tasks. • Data harvesting instead of editorial tasks (“cut & paste”) • We consider ourselves a service provider where our webpage is one of many services.
Utdanning.no • The website is mainly a metadata portal where the key services that we offer are: • A national centralised repository with Course descriptions of “all” educations in Norway (course description metadata). CDM • A national centralised repository of learning object metadata. • A framework for learning content publishing (new!).
Learning object repository • Metadata collection harvested from minor collections. • Norwegian biggest repository for educational digital content. (5500 resources) • The number of resources and the number of users are increasing steadily. • Since last summer we have doubled the number of resources and have 4 times as many users.
Strategic process “Marketplace for commercial and non-commercial producers” • Harvest small governmental websites. (ims LOM) • Fine tune routines for import / export. (API) • Offer services to 3 part organisations. (Gdata, SRW/SRU, OAI-PMH ) • Offer framework for Learning content publishing. (CMS) • Offer harvesting from commercial producers. (ims LOM) • Offer harvesting mechanism for content and metadata harvesting. (Atom publishing server. Files + metadata) • Offer harvesting from a collection of resources for people with disabilities.

Service oriented repository • Harvesting of minor collections. • GUI with IMS LOM fields filtering. (HTML) • Search boxes • RSS • Fedora support OAI-PMH harvesting. • SRW and GData search API. • Combination of GData and OAI filtered harvesting.
To do • Extend with more service-oriented services. • More Web 2.0 communication with the end user. • Connect our repository to international federated search projects. (Fire / LRE) • Change from the use of open source to become open source.
Behind the scene • In Norway we use http://bak.domain.no • Partner information, what happens behind the portal? What technology to we use? • http://bak.utdanning.no instead of • http://www.utdanning.no
Technology • Fedora Repository software. • FEZ administration interface. • Drupal end user interface. (Todo) • Solr (Lucene) search engine. (Todo) • Format: HTML, LOM, DC, RSS • API: OAI-PMH, SRW, Gdata • Filtered Harvest: Gdata + OAI-PMH
Publishing framework • Utdanning.no offers this as service for external editorial groups. • Utdanning.no does not want any editorial responsibility. • By now it is offered to a cooperation of local governments. They use it for three different subjects at high school. • Their ambition is to make the content so comprehensive that it could replace the traditional book. • The content is partly produced by teachers and partly bought from publishing companies. • Fag.utdanning.no
