Religion overview • The religion of ancient Rome was polytheistic in origin in line with religious traditions in wider iron age. Republic was strongly influenced by Hellenistic Greece. Much of the recorded reglion of pre-Christian Rome
Major gods • Jupiter- king of the gods • Juno- queen of the gods • Neptune- god of the sea • Pluto- god of death • Apollo- god of the sun • Diana- goddess of the moon • Mars- god of war
Superstitions, Auspices, and omens • Their world was full of unexplained phenomena darkness and fear. To Romans these superstitions were a perfect natural part in the relationship between gods and men. The roman habitat of interpreting natural phenomena as signs from the beyond.
Views and fate • The belief in the existence of a blind and inexorable fate can lead to a conflict with the belief in a benevolent providence. In the Greco- roman world where fatalistic belief was strong and where it found a popular expression in astrology
Ceremonies and rituals • Socially funerals were a central highly visible means of preserving the heritage of a family and genes.
