  2. Situation Many middle-aged farmers feel inadequately trained to use computer technology. Many great resources to use Web Sites Spreadsheets E-Mail Commercial Software

  3. Bridging the Gap Between Skills and Resources—In Partnership with: • North Central Risk Management Education Center • Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Service • Illinois Risk Management Agency • University of Illinois Extension

  4. Funding • Registration fee for Andy’s Project is $20 per person • The North Central Risk Management Education Center provided $8,500 for: • USB memory sticks • Class supplies • Computer lab rental • Instructor travel • Publicity development and distribution

  5. Class Structure • Four meetings • Each meeting lasts 2 hours • Farmers are hands-on • Homework • Farmers are placed in groups of five • Work on laptops with wireless connection to the internet or in computer labs • Style of education is experiential, open to questions from participants, and interactive with instructors

  6. What They Learn • Computer terminology • Learn about computers in terms of speed, and storage capacity • Very practical uses for spreadsheets that they can apply immediately • How to navigate the internet • How to manage files • E-mail set up and use

  7. Topics • Computer hardware and software, basic terminology • Setting up e-mail accounts (needed for setting up E Gov accounts) • How to search the internet for valuable resources • How to put simple spreadsheets together and navigate the more complicated pre-programmed spreadsheets available from farmdoc and other websites. • File management and where things go in a computer. • Farmers are supplied with a USB memory stick which they learn to use for storing and retrieving information.

  8. Instructor Recruitment • Extension educators • Community college ag instructors • Ag suppliers who are frequent users of computers for ag applications • Lenders

  9. Instructor Recruitment • Two instructors for each class (minimum) • Be open to questions, checking frequently that participants are gaining in skills and confidence to use computers
