Isis2 Status Report Now Nextsteps Domains: A feature to let us run the system multiple times, with interconnectivity (like the DNS hierarchy) on millions of nodes Support C++/C/Java Experiments at massive scale MOOC and: Teach large numbers of users how to work with the system Higher level artifacts: Services built using Isis2 (e.g. GridCloud) but with distinct functionality that has inherently high value • Released: Dec 2011, many updates since then (isis2.codeplex.com) • Users: Perhaps 25, with two substantial projects (Snavely: Scalable 3D image reconstruction from 2D photos; DOE/ARPAe: GridCloud) • Limitations: Some stability challenges, forced to work in C# or IronPython • Key Accomplishment: Showing that we can overcome the CAP limitation by trading responsiveness against durability
1 1 Grid topology and “model” 1 GridCloud: Cloud-hosted high-assurance system to monitor the electric power grid (ARPAe funding) 1 Scalable, parallel hierarchical state estimator 1 PMU: A sensor (synchrophasor) used to measure the voltage and phase angle of a power bus State Estimator (SE): An application that computes state of the grid from PMU and topology data Use cases: Visualize grid state to assist human operators Routine balancing of loads and generation Grid Protection Adaptation after topology changes Integration of renewable energy PMUs (many thousands) EC2 1 1 Within the cloud, “sharded” data representation affords extreme scalability, overcomes data loss/delay 1 1 Internet 1 Visualization tools display results to grid operators Proprietarynetwork link
